I just followed David's two links as described by him. Obviously a bit of confusion by me. I am most grateful for all the help and it will be interesting to now see if beta still wants me! If so I now know what to do.

The confusion was partly my fault as I left in some text in relation to a user who couldn't uninstall normally from programs and features, etc. But it still mentioned start from the next step, the uninstall utility.

No worries. The words 'if you can't do that ...'  was what lead me to consider  only the second link if my uninstall was unsuccessful. However it will be interesting to see now if I am still in the loop beta.  I will post the outcome for the info of others.

I am in the 2018 beta release advice!
No problem ... at some stage I can go through the uninstall/install procedure again but this time include avastclear 
I guess that I can also ignore these updates until a full release from the current 2015 is made..

Avast 10.2.2218 isn't a beta build this has now been released. The last beta was 2217.
