Just wondering.. Why did Avast fail the latest Virus Bulletin?
« on: February 01, 2003, 03:49:55 AM »
 >:(

ALthough I am not an Avast! user, I testdrove it for a couple of days, last month... I thought it was a well written program, easy to use, and with some good features... I don't mean to be nasty, and I'm not. I am just wondering why Avast! failed the latest Test from Virus Bulletin.. Presently I use NOD32, AND I'm very happy, but if I ever had to switch,  I would consider Avast!  However, the many VB tests that failed worry me..

Any comments?

Hi Straight Shooter !
Quote
I am just wondering why Avast! failed the latest Test from Virus Bulletin..
This is not clear to me yet  ??? In the text there is written that avast missed single sample of VBS:Redlof in on demand test. This is strange because:
  • we detect VBS:Redlof without problems
  • on access scan did probably detect the very same sample (100% rate)
  • the detection method is the same for both o/a and o/d tests
I've immediatelly contacted the VB technical editor but I did not get any response yet. If we get some new info, I will post it here

Tested it here. No problem whatsoever. Worked fine.

VBA awards are very misleading in my opinion unless you a subscriber ,you dont have full access to information on why a product passed or failed. As a user of NOD32 Straight Shooter..you may be intrested in this article and see how utterly ridiculous the VBA awards have been..and still are...

Thanks bassbag... As we can see, virus bulletins could be delivered with a lot of antivirus companies 'side' effects and desires  :(

BTW - Virus Bulletin published some older issues of its magazine on their website recently. Namely, the latest tests from 2003 could be found here:

Virus Bulletin 02/2003 - Windows NT SP6, page 16
Virus Bulletin 05/2003 - RedHat Linux 8, page 18
Virus Bulletin 06/2003- Windows XP, page 15

And there is also the standalone avast! (and BART!) review in the
Virus Bulletin 07/2003 - you can find there what experts think about your antivirus program  ;D ;D !

Congratulations.  Those articles look pretty good.
The wind in the wires made a tattletale sound
And a wave broke over the railing
And every man knew, as the Captain did, too,
T'was the witch of November come stealing.
