Last two updates of Avast! free turns on Windows Defender?

The last two times I updated Avast! Free v. 2015.10.2.2218 and the one previous, Windows Defender got turned on for some reason. I am using Windows 8.1. Is Windows Defender supposed to be on in a standard Avast! install now, or is this just an installer glitch?

I turned Windows Defender back off. I'm not sure if the intention is to have it on now.

When you install a new program update, there is a point where avast has to change the low level drivers, it can't do that with avast running.

I think that during this period windows detects avast (or your AV) isn't up and maw switch on defender. When avast is installed, windows should automatically detect that and disable defender.

Yeah, I tried it on the machine upstairs and Windows Defender was never activated. It's just a funny quirk of this machine. God knows what. Thanks for your reply.
