Avast Internet Security Repair Window "Frozen"
« on: April 30, 2015, 08:06:31 AM »
So I was having an odd issue with Avast (The taskbar icon had disappeared even though avast was still running) and I looked it up online, I read that restarting the computer can fix the issue, but at the moment restarting my computer would cause me a huge headache. The other suggested option was to run a repair on it. So I went to my add/remove programs and started up the installer/uninstaller/repair/change window.

I went to repair and clicked continue and the button greyed out and everything else became un-clickable. For a while I thought this was a strange way of it telling me it was repairing however after leaving it there for a couple of hours I started to suspect something was wrong. It wont let me close the window and when I try to end the process in task manager the repair window goes unresponsive for a couple of seconds and then nothing happens.

I'm running windows 8 (not 8.1) if that helps, I'm not even sure if this issue is repeatable, but as I said restarting this computer would cause a huge headache so I figured I'd try asking on here about it before I went through that.

First update to version 8.1
After that perform a clean installation of avast:

So updating to 8.1 is not an option that I have for multiple compatibility reasons that I'm not going to go in to. Also the thread you linked to has absolutely nothing to do with the problem I'm having.. I don't have two separate installations of Avast.

Edit:
Unless you were intending to just link to that as instructions for how to re-install avast. In which case thank you, although I already know restarting my computer would fix the issue, as I said all I'm trying to do at this point is somehow close the repair window without having to restart my computer.

The post shows how to perform a clean installation.
There are a couple of issues known after upgrading.
A clean installation often solves them.

Alright, well as I said all I'm trying to do at this point is get rid of the repair window while avoiding a computer restart.

A reboot to safe mode is needed for the uninstall tool to work.

Do you want help with solving the problem or not ?
If you do, perform a clean installation and see if the problem is solved or not.

I don't think you really understand the issue I'm having. Simply restarting my computer would get rid of the window and solve my problem. My issue is that I need to get rid of the repair window without restarting the computer. So the solution your giving me isn't a solution to my problem.

I do understand your issue.
I'm almost 100% sure the solution I gave you will solve it.
It is up to you to do as I suggested or not.
If you don't, we can't help you.

You're ignoring half of the problem though, the half that says I can't restart my computer. A solution that ignores half of the problem isn't a solution to the problem.

That means you can restart the system. Either follow the instructions, or be on your own.

My question was how do I get rid of the repair window *without* restarting my system. Please don't then immediately tell me to restart the system.

Ok, so you are refusing to listen/follow instructions.
That means we can not help you.
You are on your own now.
Please stop wasting our time.

You did not answer my question. What you are doing is like answering "Where can I buy things online that isn't amazon?" with "amazon". I mean seriously.... You're acting like you've answered my question when I specifically said "without restarting my computer". If that's the only answer you have then there's really no point saying it because it is not an answer to my question.
