Windows Defender Updates Still Appear
« on: May 03, 2015, 02:12:27 AM »
Hi,
I installed avast ~a month ago onto Windows 8.1 and just recently Windows Update started showing me Windows Defender Updates. At the moment I have to go into Windows Update and hide all of the Windows Defender Updates. Is there any fix for this?

There is nothing to fix since there is nothing wrong/broken.

It is as if you disable the shields in avast, you still will receive the (streaming) updates.

You can turn it off, but windows update will still send the updates for it.

Never been that case for me, that is until windows notices that avasts needs to be rebooted for updates/changes and defender is started but I dont always reboot right away.

However it is annoying, since the updates don't install and I have to hide them.

They install you just aren't using the product. It's still being kept up to date.
That keeps you somewhat safe if you remove Avast for any reason.

Perhaps it behaves differently depending on which OS is in use.  On my Vista box,
if you double clicked the Defender icon in control panel, it said "defender is stopped", or words to that effect.

In that situation there were no updates to Defender, not until I restarted it, many months later.

Defender can be set so that  real time activity is inactive but it still does a scan once a week, and still updates
while it is in this state.

However, I have to go and clear them as they fail installing.

I, and some others with windows 8.1 have had the same problem. I solved it by uninstalling Avast and then installing the updates for Defender and then re-installing Avast.

I only had the problem that one time, and so far, haven't seen it again.

I'll have to do that on the weekend. I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks! I repaired Avast through Programs and Features in the Windows Control Panel. This took about 10min. Before clicking done, I disabled Windows Defender manually.
