aswOfferTool.exe - Application Error
« on: May 17, 2015, 06:31:14 PM »
I'm getting an error wiht Avast Free Edition every time I boot into Windows 7. Using the latest download and program is fully up-to-date. I gather this is something to do with the Chrome installation 'offer' which I always refuse at installation.

[aswOfferTool.exe - Application Error[/b]
The exception Illegal Instruction
An attempt was made to execute an illegal instruction.
(0x000001d) occurred in the application at location 0x6abf4472.
Click on OK to terminate the program.

I've run the repair option in Add / Remove Programs - no change.
I've run avastclear and reinstalled Avast - no change.
Searched registry for aswOffer - nothing.
Searched pc files for aswOffer - nothing.
Nothing in msconfig Startup about this either.
I use Avast Free on other PC's without a problem, just this one.
I'm fed up of looking for a fix and wasted enough time on it - any suggestions before I dump Avast once and for all?

Hi,

Can you take a screenshot with an error?

Also, can you prepare Support Package and send me an ID of your package, please?

Thanks for your response.

@drfisher
Hi!

You're not alone. 'Thoroughbred' seems to be special. You have '2000+' with 1.66 GHz. So was my ASUS 'A7V880' (see in my sig) until I pushed it up to '2200+' with 1.8 GHz.
Now I'm waiting for a fix since March.

aswOfferTool.exe - Application Error
(0x000001d) occurred in the application at location 0x6abf4472.

The first address (0x000001d) should be '0xc000001d'! If you proof the location of the application, you will see, that only the digits 4 to 6 changed (--> 2 Screenshots).

Thanks HDW.
You're right of course, it's 0xc000001d.
So, is this likely to just be an issue with Thouroughbred?  It's worked okay on this sytem before, so there must have been a change with Avast which is causing the error.

1: You're welcome.  :)
2: Thank you for confirming.
3: Seems so. For all other systems on several machines are running fine.
4: So it was on this machine!

The only we can do is waiting for the answer of radil.

I think "1d" is the illegal instruction "code", not an address.  It's weird most users are running just fine on various
flavors of Athlon XP.  As far as I know they all support SSE instructions but not any of the later extensions.

At first glance it would appear that either avast tried to execute an instruction that did not exist on those old CPU's
or there was some other error and the program took a wild branch and tried to execute garbage.

either way, I'm surprised we haven't got a answer from the avast team by now.
