Ok I've saw strange thing, try this:

1. Press "Choose skin"
2. When decide that You don't want to change skin and press "Cancel"
3. Here it goes: a big and long error window.
4. Close it.
5. Dialog remains, press cancel again.
6. The last error window.
7. Simple User Interface terminates.

Is it normal???  :-\

Well, it really doesn't sound normal (though I don't think anything relevant has changed in the beta). Is the problem reproducible, i.e. does it crash every time? Do you have to select a different skin in the selection dialog (before clicking "Cancel") to invoke the crash, or is it enough simply to open the skin selection dialog and then close it with "Cancel"?

Please, try the following: Make sure your Logging sensitivity is set to Info or Debug in program settings; open the Log Viewer and clear the Info cathegory. Now, invoke the crash again. A few new items shoud appear in the Log Viewer (Info) in between. What do they say?

Log:
2005.11.02 11:43:21   Pauliux   3252   ASWSIMPLE program run information: CaswSimpleDlg::LoadSkinObjects() failed. Invalid skin?.
2005.11.02 11:44:07   Pauliux   4060   ASWSIMPLE program run information: CaswSimpleDlg::LoadSkinObjects() failed. Invalid skin?.
2005.11.02 11:48:04   Pauliux   948   ASWSIMPLE program run information: CaswSimpleDlg::LoadSkinObjects() failed. Invalid skin?.

It's enough just to press cancel , and error apperas every time...  :-\

Just that? Try to refresh, please... there should be something more (about SkinCorrect()).

Did/do you use any non-English version of avast?

Nothing more. Using English version of avast, default installation on fresh computer (10 days ago). Besides, I don't use skins usually, so I've noticed it accidentally.  :)

So, did you select skins to be installed during the installation?

OK, check the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ALWIL Software\Avast\4.0
Is there a value called CurrentSkin there?
If not, create it (as a string value) and set it to Silver Panel.asws, or whatever your skin filename is.

Correction: it would work if the value wasn't present - but if the value CurrentSkin is present, but contains an invalid filename, it really behaves as you described. So, delete the value and avast! should recreate it when it's restarted.

No, there is no entry You've mentioned... but as I'm not using skins usually, it's not a problem for me. just thought it's some kind of beta problem. Skins work well...

Edit: besides, I've just changed one skin to other, and now I have no problems with cancel button anymore. Checked it several times, no error left... Really strange, isn't it?  :-\

reg key CurrentSkin is also present in registry.  ;D

Thanks for help!  ;)

I just Noticed one small problem

If you run a boot time scan the information is not updated on the startup GUI

that is "Date of last scan is not updated"
Windows 10 Pro | Intel I7 CPU | 16 Gig 2133 RAM | Avast beta 17.5.2295 | Firefox 54 b9(64-bit) | Cyberfox 52.1 | T-Bird 52.1.1 | SpyWareBlaster 5.5 | MalwareBytes 3.0.0.865 | WinPatrol 35.5.2 | GlassWire 1.2.100 | Cybereason Ransomfree 2.2.7 |  Pulla-dePlug Final!

I wouldn't have though that would be updated as a result of a boot time scan as windows isn't running. So the usual way of updating this data, e.g. via the GUI of the simple user interface can't be used.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 22.5.6015 (build 22.5.7263.730) UI 1.0.711/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Did you run a "system wide" boot-time scan? (i.e. did you select All Local Disks in the scheduling dialog?)
Did you let the whole scan finish?

I checked it right now and it should work...
