Yikes! 162 Unable to Scans
« on: November 13, 2003, 11:08:04 PM »
Just did a Standard Scan. While no viruses were found, there were 162 listings for Unable to Scan. What should I do, if anything?
I was going to send a few samples, but the line for viewing the last scan is greyed out!

Take a look at your report file (generally, C:\...\Avast\Data\Report folder).
Maybe the Simple User Interface.txt and Scan_local disks.txt files could say us something about your files...  ;)

If you use an application that stores things in password protected archives you will run into this problem.  Spybot if you have had adware or spyware in the past can cause this.

 Taking them from the top:
 -MacLover2000: Home (I just added a sig)
-Technical: In my Report folder are three items--avast 10kb xsl style sheet; background 1 kb GIF image; logo 6kb GIF image
 -doggeral: I use Ad-aware.
Hope this info can help you help me.

Sorry, to create the report file, you must turn on this option first (before starting the scan). It's in the program Settings / Report File / Create Report File.

Thanks, Igor; that sure was easy. It took 40 minutes for the Standard scan I did yesterday. Should I do the Standard again to come up with a report file to post, or would the Quick scan do the trick?

Well, it's hard to say - it is possible that if you do only a quick scan instead of the Standard one, some of the "unable to scan" messages will disappear...

Okay. A Standard it is. But not for several hours because there are things to go and places to do. lol

Here is the report of my scan a few minutes ago. I was told it is too long, so I'm going to try to send it in two parts. Hope is makes sense. Please let me know of any concerns I should have and what to do about them.

The password protected files seem to be ok. If you turn off the option 'soft errors' they will 'disappear' from your log. The password of these files not even you know... The probability of a virus to infect such protected files is quite low.

But, the files with [AsPack] error, these I suggest you mail them to Igor or Peter (kurtin@asw.cz). I don´t know if Igor has a 'public' email. If they were too big to use the email, please, wait Peter come back from USA and ask him to open his FTP site for uploading them.  ;)

As Technical said, the password-protected files are OK. It's either a data file of some application that uses a password protected archive as its private format or some kind of installation you have deleted (it's in the Recycled folder).

The [AsPack] corrupted files are probably the same as I checked previously (at least the IrfanView ones) - so they should be OK in the next version of avast.

I have no idea what is "Error 0x0000A44E" in the CAB files - PK might have some more info on that.

Thanks to Technical and Igor; you have been extremely helpful and patient. Now for three apologies:
 1. I don't know who Peter (PK) is. Maybe one of those pictured in the alwil home page?
 2. I don't know how to find out when Peter comes back from the USA and how to ask him to open his FTP site for uploading them.
 3. I'm sure I've seen the instructions, but I can't find out how to send a personal message (as Technical suggests) or how to find out if a person has a "public" email.
In the meantime, I'll see about turning off the "soft errors" option as Technical suggests.

1. I don't know who Peter (PK) is. Maybe one of those pictured in the alwil home page?

Peter (pk) is an avast! team member. He usually works with packed files into avast! (see, for example, this forum). The 'ugly' face of pk will appear there...  ;D

2. I don't know how to find out when Peter comes back from the USA and how to ask him to open his FTP site for uploading them.

Just send an email to him as ask so (kurtin@asw.cz). But, right now, you may wait untill he comes back from USA. A week I suppose.

3. I'm sure I've seen the instructions, but I can't find out how to send a personal message (as Technical suggests) or how to find out if a person has a "public" email.

See the buttons at the bottom of his photo... There are lots of ways to get in contact with him.  ::)
