Can't scan some files.
« on: November 01, 2005, 09:13:54 PM »
I have windows xp and use  Avast 4.6 home.

When I do a thorough scan I always have files that can't be scanned.  Those from Lavasoft, I don't worry much about but am concerned with ones like these:

D:\i386\Apps12148\msc\agentins.ui\agentins.ini
D:\i386\Apps12148\msc\agentins.ui\\default.htm
D:\i386\Apps12148\msc\agentins.ui\header.vbs

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
DAISY

What was the exact message (reason) why the files couldn't have been scanned?

As Igor said, the reason why is required to fully evaluate your concern.

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn't know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can't be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. Is the D:\ partition used for recovery purposes, a google search for the 'agentins.ui' file seems to relate to McAfee. So this is likely to be password protected.

Files that can't be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

sorry I forgot to tell ya this:
Archive is password protected.

D is were the system restore files are.

McAfee had been installed on my puter  by the factory.  I  have never used it.  I Thought all the files were gone when I uninstalled them.  Is there any way to remove them?

Thanks,
DAISY

Password protected can't be opened for scanning. Don't worry about them.

I'm not that sure, maybe in their website you can get more info about uninstallation...  :-\

I think you would have to check with the manufacturer/retailer as the files are likely to be some form of backup to enable you/them to restore the system back to as it was when it was sent to you. However there isn't enough information to identify what purpose the i386 folder is for (as this is usually found in sub folders of the windows folder or windows CD and usually contains driver/s info).

Welcome to the forums.
