Folders in setup
« on: June 20, 2015, 10:46:58 PM »
Hi there,

I have over 40+ folders under Program Files/Avast Software/Avast/Setup that are empty....Can I delete these safely,or are they needed for some reason...?

Avast Free:2015.10.2.2214.....XP Sp3

Thanks...

I suspect that he means these emergency update folders (see image attachment), they really are a pain, avast housekeeping should get rid of them.

@igor

Sorry for the delay....The attachment that DavidR posted is exactly what I am referring to...99% of them are from 2014...
So my question again is can they safely be deleted???

Whilst I can't see exactly what is on your explorer screen, I have for some time been manually deleting these uniquely named folder, providing that they are at least a month old (or leaving the most recent one. This obviously comes with a health warning, left in place they can't really do any harm or take up a great deal of disk space. But deletion could have some ramification, I haven't experienced any problem in doing this, the choice is yours on how to proceed.

You would have to disable the avast self-defence to be able to delete them. Ensure that you enable the self-defence module when you have done.

Whatever you do don't remove the emupdate folder or any of its contents - even though some of there uniquely named .exe files may be old.

@ DavidR

Thanks for your explicit answer...Yes I plan to ONLY delete the folders under Setup folder...I am also going to make an image of my system before the erasure....(just in case)
I realize they are not taking up much disk space,but,I guess I would call myself a bit of a neat geek,so that anything not needed, I flush down the drain so to speak...

You're welcome.

The folders you see in my attached image are what remains of sub-folders of the avast\setup folder for my avast free version.
