If you can provide a little more information on the error, does it give anything more as to why it can't complete the operation?

What do you mean by the On-Access control, do you mean viewing the avast providers (left clicking the avast icon) or right clicking the avast icon and select Start avast! Antivirus... ?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn't work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

Is there a little red Stop Sign on the avast icon?
What is the version of avast are you using what version number is it (the latest regular release is 4.6.691)?

Is there any more information in the error message, it seems a little short? - like  "AAVM subsystem detected a RPC error," which is usually associated with this and usually indicates the presence of another anti-virus.

Have you got (or had) another AV on your computer, if so what and how was it removed?

Is this thread similar to your problem http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=16403.0 and if so does the suggestion of updating to the latest version resolve the problem?

There is normal avast! sign but gray.
I am using avast home edition 4.6.691
error is : The requested resident task was not found. The operation could not be completed.
I always had avast but when it stopped working i instaled kasprersky, Then i uninstalled kaspersky and installed avast again. it was removed by uninstal.
This link dont told me anything

Mine is a Gray shade of Blue also.

Run this utility to remove all traces of Kaspersky from the registry:
http://www.ice-kav.com/downloads/util/KAV_Registry_Clean.zip
ICE is a US distributor for Kaspersky.
Also read more about KAV Removal Tools http://www.ice-kav.com/utilities.php

This may also be a consideration as it can sometimes cause a related error but not in these circumstances.

First check out this avast! FAQ answer http://www.avast.com/eng/other_questions.html#idt_1406. For avast! Pro users it is best to update the ODBC Drivers, Home users can switch to XML storage.

Right click the avast! icon and select Program Settings, then Troubleshooting and tick the Use XML storage instead of ODBC.
