ashserv surging CPU usage to 100%
« on: November 14, 2005, 04:05:03 PM »
I have XP Home, and have several users setup. On some of the users, but not all, the ashserv process is surging from 2% to 100% CPU usage every 2 to 5 seconds. I have verified in the task manager "performance" window that this is the problem.  This started a week ago.

Any ideas on how to stop this or why it is only happening on some users?  I have done several full scans with avast on a stable user, and several online scans and the the system is clean.

As long as I stop all avast processes, those users work fine, but are unprotected.

I really like Avast and this is the first problem I have had.

ashServ.exe may well be scanning something that is running in the background, it is allocated a High windows priority so it can scan and return priority to other programs.

Are you multi tasking?
What sensitivity is Standard Shield set to Normal, High or Custom?

You shouldn't have to stop all providers only those that are using the CPU time, if it is a problem.

The latest version of avast is 4.6.731 do a manual update if yours is earlier. Check and see if this resolves the issue.

Thanks,  I am already running 4.6.731 and the shield was set to high. Changed it to normal and testing.

It was surging without any apps open, except Task manager with no other users logged in.

Any way to find what it is trying to scan in the background?

Thanks again!

If you've set the sensibility to High, could be each file, anyone of the disk as all of them will be scanned.

Do you happen to have Generate VRDB when Idle as that may cause the CPU increase.

Don't just look in the Applications Tab of Task Manager, what Processes are running also, they too may cause activity that will in turn be scanned by avast with the sensitivity on High.

No, VRDB is set to generate when screen saver is running.  Running processes for all users is where I found the ashserv was the problem.  With almost everything off, system Idle & ashserv were alternating from 2% to 98%.

Now you are running with standard shield on Normal, does this have a reduced effect?

When it was running at 100% was the avast icon rotating, indicating it was scanning something?

If so, open the on-access detailed view for Standard Shield and see what file it is scanning.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn't work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot. It would probably be a good idea to download the latest version to use when you have uninstalled.

Running at Normal setting seems to have done the trick.  I will give it a few days and report back.

Thanks all!
