Avast breaking chkdsk and system restore
« on: August 03, 2015, 02:51:58 PM »
I am running Avast Free Antivirus 2015 (10.3.2223) on Windows 7 Pro.

Since upgrading the Avast program from within the "Settings -> Update -> Program" option about a month ago, I have repeatedly (three times) had the following problem occur where I am unable to schedule a chkdsk of C upon restart. When I schedule the disk check and restart, I get the following message:

> Cannot open volume for direct access.
> Autochk cannot run due to an error caused by a recently installed software package.
> Use the system restore feature from the control panel to restore the system to a point prior to the recent software package installation.

Attempts to perform any System Restore fail with an unknown error.
The solution all three times has been to uninstall Avast Antivirus, run the disk check, and then reinstall Avast.

Does anyone know how can I prevent this problem from occuring so I can run chkdsk without issues?

By all means give the new version a try. If that fails try going back to an older version of the avast program and see if the disk check works.

I'm using 10.3.2215 to solve lockups while browsing.

Go to Programs and Features, click on avast  and choose edit, then uncheck Virtual Machine.

This problem has been known for the update 2223, it comes from NG.

Okay I tried check disk on my win 7 system with avast version 10.3.2223 and it would not run. I did an avast clean install to version 10.3.2218 and now check disk works. Please note I did not turn off NG in the older version (I may just to be on the safe side). I was also able to create a restore point but I did not do a restore.

I was going to do win10 update but now I feel I must wait till avast is truly fixed.

The 10.3.2218 release was not the problem just since 10.3.2223.  ;)

Thanks, good to know. I may try an update the vista computer to 2218. I have it on 2215. Please note the vista computer was locking up while browsing even with NG uninstalled in version 2223 and 2225.

The "new" version wasn't available when I was having the problem, but I've now upgraded. We'll see.
A full uninstall/reinstall of Avast always fixed it before.

This thread was useful as well saying which said to disable the Virtual Machine feature to fix the problem:

I contacted Avast tech support a week ago, and they weren't even aware of this issue.  :-\
