Forum logon Captcha
« on: August 04, 2015, 01:48:30 PM »
I dislike this new anti-robot logon protection.  The images are far from clear and some are ambiguous.  Perhaps the designer knows which images show swimming pools and which do not but it isn't clear at a glance.  Assuming that forum members are literate, couldn't something less vague be used?

I can't login with my default browser - Pale Moon anymore, even with Firefox compatibility mode.
I see this :

Everything is fine with Cyberfox and Firefox.
Avast, what a mess.

Hi abruptum,

They possibly haven't read here: Re: Advantages And Disadvantages Of Using Captcha *
Advantages:

Distinguishes between a human and a machine
Makes online polls more legitimate
Reduces spam and viruses
Makes online shopping safer
Diminishes abuse of free email account services

Disadvantages:

Sometimes very difficult to read
Are not compatible with users with disablilities  (you cannot distinguish between colors as others do)
Time-consuming to decipher
Technical difficulties with certain internet browsers (well you provided the example for that one)
May greatly enhance Artificial Intelligence
(always analyze the page with uMatrix for instance and know what to block immediately of third party content, just depending on Captcha security is relying too much on AI and that is dumbing down users and others).

I didn't encounter it when it was first introduced, I had to log out (I normally don't) and log back in. I was presented with the logon screen and an option check box I'm a human, etc. and clicked logon and it did. No Captcha screen for me.

I shut my system down at night, when I booted and opened my profile page in firefox 39.0 it just opened the page, no logon or captcha screen.

I am not going to change my default browser because of Avast forum.
I don't have any problems with the same type of captcha on Mediafire, so obviously you did
something wrong with this login captcha.
Anyway, why do you think there is need for captcha since we all are logged with our Avast accounts ?
This is totally stupid.

Can't really say why we need a general CAPTCHA but have seen a miniscule number of users saying they can't log in using their account name (you know what I mean) and password here over the past three weeks or so.  Something changed for them and maybe avast has taken the steps needed to prevent this from happening to more of us in the future.  If so, kudos for taking this step before it became a major issue.

Just speculation on my part, tho.  Would be nice if avast would take the time to announce why this was done.

I would say that your speculation would be incorrect.

My thinking that is introducing the Captcha wouldn't stop those people having difficulty logging on as they still have to enter the username/email and password. Then they have the additional step of captcha.

Well, it would be a nice thing if we had the info and could avoid speculation in the first place.

There is an assumption that the user is familiar with what is shown in the images.  I don't know my noodles from my pasta.
