Request information
« on: November 18, 2005, 06:49:17 PM »
I'm new to this fourm ... just registered today.

What I'd like to know:
I have been using the free Home Edition of Avast for a year now and truly love it.  Today in a news letter I received info that soon Avast will no longer offer a free edition. Completely understandable.

What I want to know (if anyone has this info) is whether or not there will be a Home edition at a lower cost, or will only the Pro version be available? :o 8)

I don't think there are any plans to discontinue the free version. What exactly did you receive?

From Cloud Eight Info Ave Premium:
It appears that many of the rumors floating around about Avast, AVG, anti-virus programs and Kerio, Outpost, and Sygate firewalls are true. If you haven't heard, it looks like 2006 will bring an end to free anti-virus programs AVG and AVAST have been offering the Internet community for many years. And, Kerio, Sygate, and Outpost will not being offering free software firewalls much longer either. We suspect it has to do with these companies trying to survive in light of the fact that the next version of Windows will come with full-featured firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware software pre-installed.

Igor,
"there are no such plans yet."
Was that word placed there by accident or was it chosen carefully?
If it wasn't an accident, then maybe the rumor is being considered???
Was this a "Clinton" answer or simply a poorly choses phrase?  ;D

Not wanting to put words into Igor's mouth. However, I think it is more a translation thing, that there are currently no plans for this but, no one can give a categorical no this will never happen, who knows what the future will bring.

Igor, it will be a shame this change of plans. I've posted my opinion about this a lot of times, but I'll post again: it will be a shame. You can change the limitations of the Home version, you can move features to Pro version... more or less..., but, please don't make avast going so deep  :P :'(

By the way, in my opinion, the ones who will never install other things that Microsoft build in applications and features, would never buy avast! They will always stay with the free version. Forget that all M$ applications are the best... it's not true. Some examples: the system restore, the build-in CD burner, the firewall, the antispyware... Tons of users are looking for GoBack, Nero, ZoneAlarm, SpyBot, etc. etc.
The best things in life are free.

Thanks for your reply David but I would still prefer a direct answer. :)

I just wanted to say that I am not aware of any such plans. On the other hand,
- I am not the one to decide such stuff  8)
- I have no idea what the situation will be in a few years

So - I don't think anything like that will happen, but as usually I am trying to be careful about my expressions and not promise anything I cannot influence. But I'd say you don't have to worry ;)
