Hi Tech,

Not had any problems myself with V731, but this link might be useful to those looking for older verstions of Avast http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/?69

Cheers,

Thorny

Just FYI ...

I found this link when I was looking online for the 691 Home Edition version too.

Before posting the link I wanted to check it out.  When I installed what purported to be the 691 release I found it to be the 665 version - so I chose not to post the link.

That may still be better than not having any VPS updates with the 731 release but the affected folks should be aware.

I haven't seen a single report of a crash here. A crash means that windows display an error message. Actually, it would be more helpful if it did - because a real crash would provide more information.
Yes, you are correct, and windows does show an error message -- The one that tells you whether you want to report the problem or not.
And if I go to the event log, it shows the error description:
Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0xC0000005, dwRes is C0000005.

I'm also sure that others have experienced and reported the same problem.

Alan, this one is supposed to be version 4.6.691 http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/?209 and this one is supposed to be version 4.6.665 http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/?136 is it possible that they are both the same or possibly clicking the next link down, they appear very close together on the screen layout?

David,

you are correct about them being very close on the screen.  So I just repeated the exercise again to be sure.

The link to 691 definitely does download a file that, when installed, is avast 665.

Thanks Alan, what a pain, it kind of negates the purpose of retaining old versions if they can't ensure what they indicate isn't correct.

Hi all!
I have been using Avast for several years and never had a problem.

But in the beginning of November Avast let me down. I was not able to update vps neither automatically nor manually as many in this thread have already stated.

The difference is that I at that time was on version 4.5.xxx.!

I noted somewhere in the fora that a poster mentioned his last successful vps-update dates and they were exactly the same as mine. Ultimo October according to my log.  ???

I know it is a radical suggestion, but perhaps something has gone wrong with the updates-files. By coincidence this occured at the same time as the new release.

Well, for me it looked as if I could not get in touch with any of the thirty+ servers, but I was able to ping them.

Anyway I was not able to update manually or automatically, but downloading the whole set of defs from Avast site did the update. I thought everything was ok, but was still not cabable of normal vps updating.

I had not done any changes with my system, firewall, updates etc. Both my system and Avast working flawlessly for a year before this.

I ended up uninstalling 4.5.xxx and installing 4.6.731 and since then everything is fine.  :D

Please try this again, if you got 0xC0000005 error, we want to resolve this problem soon.
Edit setup.ini file in avast4/setup folder, add the following lines:

[BufferLog]
Enable=1
Limit=0

Run update again (it will probably fail), and send me files Setup.ini, SetupDbg.log, Setup.log and your license key (only the letters before dash separator) to my email (forejt@avast.com)

I've stickyfied the thread until it gets resolved.

But since we're getting minimal feedback from the users experiencing this problem, it won't be that soon.  :-\

kubecj:

I am more than willing to give feedback, but as you can see from post nr 96 I do`n t have the problem any longer, but when I had it I was as I said on version 4.5.xxx. See my post.

I do not wish to Ghost back my PC to October 30, but I might  be able to extract files and mail them to you if you give me an address?  :)

Edit: The 4.5.xxx version on the said Ghost image will fail FOR THE FIRST TIME at next update attempt, if this isn`t clear from my previous post.
I know because I have tried two times before. HTH

Try this:
1)Uninstall avast! completely and restart
2)Install avast! 4.6.731 (latest version) and restart
3)Wait for automatic database update (a few seconds), it should complete successfully
4)Enter your license key
5)Again restart and wait if it fails

Also, please add the following info:
Installation language
Regional settings and timezone
License expiration dates for database updates and for program

Thanks...
