Vista 32bit stuck on boot (aswrvrt.sys) - FRST log attached
« on: August 13, 2015, 08:04:00 PM »
Hello - - I read a number of other posts and followed the instructions for loading and scanning with  FRST.   I have attached the log file and if anyone can help me with a fix list it would be great.
Thanks!!

Is this Vista or XP ?  As the MBR says XP yet FRST says Vista

It is  Windows Vista  Home Premium .  Not sure  what MBR stands for, but the laptop is definitely running Vista.

I've seen a number of your posts and really appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Larry

I see you have a second disc in the computer, could you unplug and then try a normal boot

I see what you mean at the bottom of the FRST log.  That is really weird that the restore drive is listed as XP.

I used the service tag to get the specs for the laptop.  There's only one HD.  This is from the specification list: -  Hard Drive, 320GB, S2, 9.5, 5.4K TSHBA-VIR.  I believe it is divided into 2 discs - - a C drive with about 300Gb and a D drive with about 8Gb.

I was suspicious and actually opened up the laptop and as you can see in the attached picture, there is one drive and an open bay.

It seems odd that FRST lists it as two discs.

Thoughts?

Hmm that may be part of the problem

Lets try this first though

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Start the computer as before
Start FRST and press fix
Once completed try a normal boot

I downloaded the fixlist and ran the file with the FRST fix.   Tried to boot the computer normally  several times.  No luck.  Went to F8 and tried to boot in Safe Mode.  It got hung up in the same spot - - aswRvrt.sys

Not sure what to do next.  From the command prompt I can actually get the critical new files and the rest is on backup.  If nothing else works, I could do a factory restore - - - but it takes so long to do the updates.   I wonder if a good hot fire would take care of this?

Suggestions?  Are there specific files that could be removed?

This one will remove avast services and drivers, it may work or you may end up stuck on mup.sys
Lets see

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Start the computer as before
Start FRST and press fix
Once completed try a normal boot

Big trouble.  Tried the most recent fixlist and it won't boot at all.  I have managed to get back to a DOS prompt and plan to spend sometime copying the rest of the files I need before proceeding.  MIght take a while.

Meanwhile - - I've had this laptop since 2008 and it has worked well.  It is probably time to get a new one.  I may try the restore to factory settings from the disk.

I really appreciate your help.

If you have any other suggestions, I will be happy to try them after I get done moving files.

Thanks!!

OK - - moved the files and did a factory restore.  Everything working great.  Thanks for the suggestions.  Not sure I'm going to reinstall AVAST - - it seemed like that was the troublesome file.
