  • Come on lad! You've only got 70 yards to go.
Using a slower computer sometimes reveals things that would escape the notice of users of post stone-age hardware.  I have updated Avast Free 10.2.2215 to 10.4.2233 and noticed that whereas the older version downloaded a certain 173MB file at a steady c.960kBps, version 10.4.2233 downloaded the same file at c.300kBps until 24% had been passed when the rate rapidly increased to c.960kBps.  The behaviour is invariable.  Small downloads do not seem to trigger this behaviour.  I have a hunch that users of modern (quick) hardware would not notice it.  Has the intelligence of stream scanning been made even more intelligent?

Well just a general comment; Older computers are inherently 'slower'.
I have a dell laptop I purchased in 2001 with XP Pro. This laptop has used Avast since V.4 and now uses the latest stable version.
I can say without a doubt the RESOURCES needed to run avast has increased dramatically and while extremely noticeable on the xp SP4 over the years is simply not noticed on my HP Compaq.
Older is Slower. :)

My old Dell also only has 2 gig of Ram, my newer computers have either 4 or 8 gig. The HD's are also faster on the newer computers.
My old Dell has been upgraded to Windows 10 and is usable but certainly doesn't compare to the newest addition.  :)
I'm personally not as fast at 75 as I was at 57 or at 21. :)  I'm also storing some extra baggage as is your old computer. :)

Yes the lack of RAM(non upgrade-able anymore) makes a huge difference as Ive noticed the RAM needed just to accommodate the newer version's GUI is significantly greater.

Anyway, I'm wondering/investigating if I can clone my xp 32 Bit OS(HD) and put it on a Partition on my HP Compaq 64 Bit Laptop.
The OS works really great it's just the case and Lid are worn out leaving it to be used in place and not moved. :-\
Bit OT now :)

I was simply trying to find out if the HTTP scanning algorithm had been changed.

I feel sure we have had a similar conversation before.

On the latest avast 2016.11.1.xxxx doesn't have an option (on XP systems) for intelligent stream scanning in the avast settings.

In that respect it has changed, but being stuck in a time warp on an older avast versions nothing will have changed from the time it was released. Given that program updates/changes aren't issued/supported for old versions.

I'm getting stuttering issues while watching a video through a webpage, or even typing this messege. It pauses for a a second before continuing.

This computer is WinXP using version 11.1.2253 of Avast.

This issue was cleared up in the previous edition (after having these problems in the version before that).

It seems that some of the workaround tricks that Avast mentioned for slower computers have been removed from this version. Not sure why. https://www.avast.com/en-gb/faq.php?article=AVKB203 That page seems out of date now.

@  Bowdon
I suggest that you start your own new topic as your issue is appears unrelated to this topic and is for a different avast program versions.

This would only confuse and hijack this topic.
