I have Avast Free installed.

To access overseas sites [BBC, etc] from Australia through unblock-us, I have to:
1. close BBC Iplayer
2. close unblock-us
3. right-click AVAST shortcut on toolbar
4. left-click Avast shields control
5. left-click Disable until computer is restarted
6. in Avast pop-up click yes
7. re-open unblock-us
8. re-open BBC Iplayer
9.  Then all is aok

Unblock-us emailed to say:
Can you try to do this instead, open the Anti Virus UI, and select 'Settings'. Next select - Active Protection. Here you will see the various Active Protection features, and where Secure DNS is located. When turning this off, you will be presented with a few options, select 'Disable Permanently'.
Hope this helps so you won't have to disable Avast every time you start up the PC.
Signed unblock-us.

Apparently Avast free version does not have Active Protection - can someone suggest how I may turn off Secure DNS on my PC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank You

Their claims that secure DNS is not part of the free version are not true, at least part of it is. You can verify it by tracing a "nslookup" command, it is going to Avast dns server and if you have a local network the IP will be changed or unknown. It is not possible to disable this in the settings of the free version.
So after quite a few years of using Avast I have finally decided to uninstall it and use something else as I had to disable it by stopping the server anyway.

Secure DNS as already mentioned is not part of the free version of Avast.
Since you give no example of what is being sent to Avast through a secure DNS, it can't be checked into any further.

In my case, this refers to SecureLine - I need it when I'm using Hotel WiFi. :)
