What is your operating system?

Resize your avatar, please - it's too big. Thanks.

What is your OS
What is your firewall?
Does it allow ashMaiSv.exe access to the internet?

Sorry about the avatar.  Hope it's ok now.   I am using Windows XP SP2.

Were you using another antivirus product before installing avast?

Did you remove that product before installing avast?

What about the firewall questions I asked?

That may not be too important if you can receive emails, you didn't mention that?

Not sure what ashMaiSv.exe is but I am able to download new messages. I just cannot send out any mail.  It just keeps on coming up with an error message box like this:

The server does not support a SSL connection. Account: 'Sympatico', Server: 'smtphm.sympatico.ca', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250 OK', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D

I am using xp's firewall as well

NinerFan,

in Outlook Express if, in accounts, you select this mail account and click on properties, then select the "Advanced" tab.

Do you have :

"Outgoing mail (SMTP):" box set to 25

and is the box below it:

"This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" checked?

yes it is,  I've gone thru all that stuff with my service provider already.   Not much luck.  They told me it may be a software problem.

Your error message said:

The server does not support a SSL connection.

You have your mail client set up to request an SSL connection which your server says it does not support.

I suggest you uncheck the box:

"This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"

and try sending your mail again.
