Windows 10 and start menu/cortana issues
« on: September 13, 2015, 11:57:10 AM »
Hello
Upgraded to windows 10 and found that on occasions the start menu stopped and Cortana stopped working.  W10 was unable to fix this and following a internet search, it was recommended to remove Avast Free edition.  I did this and all it fine but I would like to use Avast.  Is anyone aware of a fix for this?

I was getting the same issue sometimes ago, but I realize that it caused of long time startup programs take, after I limited my start up programs I stopped get this error and all worked fine with me.
so limit startup programs and make fewer...
  • right click on the taskbar (anywhere), select task manager, or simply hit (CTRL+Shift+ESC)
  • from task manager windows, select startup
  • select the non-important programs and disable them ( you can run them anytime when you want use)
this helped fix the issue with me, so give a try and check the results.
I wish that help.

I apologize, but rebooting into safe mode is a rather inconvenient way to get around this problem, and shouldn't be listed as a solution.

A solution denotes that the action performed will resolve the problem permanently, preventing it from happening again. Rebooting into safe mode each time this happens is a workaround, because it doesn't prevent this from happening again. It only allows Windows 10 to perform whatever critical action Avast is preventing during the previous normal boot.

The fact that this happens to begin with notes an incompatibility between Windows 10, and Avast.

You seem not to want to understand that this is NOT an Avast problem. It happens on computers that have never seen Avast on their systems.
It is a problem that Microsoft needs to solve. Booting into Safe Mode and then restarting your system for now is a way to get past this problem
until Microsoft fixes the problem.

Thanks for all the help.  I had already disabled most of the non-essential start up programs already but the safe mode boot option works although it is drastic.  Although this could be a Microsoft problem, it has only caused issues with Avast so maybe there is something they can do to fix it.
Thanks again

Welcome back. :)
I've experienced this on computers Before ever installing Avast and on systems that had Avast preinstalled before the upgrade.
The only thing all of these systems had in common was Windows 10.

Someone who doesn't know what he's talking about.
It's a well known Windows bug. It can happen even if you're using Defender.....
I've posted a reply for the correct fix to this problem.

Someone who doesn't know what he's talking about.

This kind of reaction is bad form, and has been the reason I've seen many people simply throw away PCs, or turn away from various products. A man that I know hung up on Avast Customer Support because they told him I was a risk to his system, and his security. I fixed his problem 5 minutes later with zero damage to his system, and zero impact on his security. He no longer trusts Avast Customer Support. (Different incident)

If this is a known Windows bug, that is fine, but wouldn't it be better to cite some kind of official documentation that indicates this fact, instead of belittling someone who is going on not only their own experience, but the experiences of many others? Just something to think about.

The customer support you're talking about is most likely the Third party Phone support.
I consider Avast responsible for their actions since they are listed on the Avast website.
They are however a third party support and not directly Avast.

Is my personal experience on many systems worth less ??? The fix I posted is easily verified by simply doing a Google search.
It's also a fix I've used more than once on systems that didn't use Avast.

I believe you're misunderstanding me. I'm not saying that your experience is worth less. What I'm saying is that simply saying that someone doesn't know what they're talking about could potentially put you in a bad light. I mean no offense, but wording means a lot when dealing with the public.

Apologies for necro-ing this thread, but I have had the same issue today "29/12/15"
This only occurred after moving from Eset Nod32 to avast, so you are wrong, some of these issues are directly related to avast and not Microsoft, if another security system doesn't trigger it but Avast does, there is obviously something wrong with Avast.

Yes, it does happen on computers without Avast, but Avast must trigger something with it's automated cleanup system that manifests the bug.
