Firewall alerting me to temp files in Avast Setup folder
« on: September 18, 2015, 07:42:34 AM »
Twice in the past week my Firewall had asked me if I want to grant Internet access to  the following two files.

C:\program files\avast software\avast\setup\1933dd93-0446-4cd3-9584-814c44b25100.exe
C:\program files\avast software\avast\setup\94519b49-aef8-4350-8c25-b2f29e1c06b6.exe

They are temp files because they are gone if I go look for them. I notice they use the same format as the GUID that Avast uses.
What are they for and why are they setting off my Firewall?

This is Avast Free so not using Avast Firewall. It is free version of 'Windows 8 Firewall Control'.

These EXE files are emergency updates (they're signed by Avast Software, so you can trust them). They're also run from our folder, which is protected with Avast self-protection module (only Avast trusted processes and write to this folder).

OK, thanks. Much appreciated. Someone at HardOCP said it might be a virus so ended up pulling out all my AV tools like rKill, TDsskiller, ClamAV, etc. to double check. Wasted a good hour or two doing that. Should have just asked here first.  :)

Yes, those numbers (guids) can look strange :)

The alert actually comes as a direct result of using Windows Firewall Control.
If you used just the firewall in windows 8, you wouldn't have gotten an alert. :)
That also holds true for Windows 10 if you should decide to upgrade.
