Hello Avast!

A short question.
Sometimes I see avast saying: The computer needs to be restarted.

Ive tried the setting:
program settings\update basic\details\ ask for reboot when needed - turned off.
and also the "silence mode" setting.

I understand that after updating the program, the computer needs to be restarted (see later in this call).

My problem is that avast wants to restart the computer every day, so it seems avast tries to update every 240 minutes.

Kind Regards,
Stefan

Another user reported the same problem recently.

In her case she had the Outlook/Exchange provider of avast activated but did not have the Outlook product (not to be confused with Outlook Express) installed.

When she turned off the Outlook/Exchange provider the requests for restarting the system from avast stopped.

Any chance your situation may be similar?

Thanks for responding SO fast.

Every provider is activated in avast, also outlook. Outlook XP and Outlook express are both used on the system.

in the "On Acess Scanner" screen which lists all of the providers, if you check the status line under the name of each provider does it give as the status for every provider:

The provider is currently running

Sometimes, operating system restart needed by avast message could be solved, in some systems, by deleting the file <avast>\setup\reboot.txt

thanks I will try this tonight.

However, the best solution is a registry(?) key or an .ini file to disable avast restarting messages.

I just dont want the AVAST! restart message displayed.

Just once? Won't hurt that much...
I suggest you disable avast (stop all providers), delete the file and boot.
After than, enable the providers again.
I'm not saying this will solve, just that it's a way to get it...

Sorry but I need to reboot the computer every evening. This is going on since more then a week already.

There is no reboot.txt in my avast\setup folder, but ive removed all txt files in this folder and told what you said, hope it helps.
Thanks for the effort.

Kind Regards.,

Avast doesn't ask to restart the computer without a reason. That reason should be found somewhere in setup.log file. Try to search it for 'reboot' string and paste the corresponding chunks here.

In the log above there are two operations:
a) void try to update
b) update of the vps database

there is nothing what may suggest that avast! should ask for reboot.
You should see that: 22:11:53 vrb/fil  NeedReboot=false

Im not surprised that avast says that restarting is not needed in the setup.log because thats the way its configured now.. The issue is that the program is not working as it should, i.o.w. bug. In the .log file we see also the word "silent" again, which also means that the software shouldnt ask every day to restart the computer.
.. So there must be an error or configuration mismatch somewhere... Its not behaving as it should!

Ive tried the disabling of the providers that are not used, but this didnt help

I will remove avast and try reinstalling, I dont see another solution.
Registry keys will be deleted also, this to perform a CLEAN install.
A while ago AVAST! was working fine without any problem, the thing that was changed was the configuration of the providers and program settings. So I think the problem lies with a security or program setting/combination that does avast need to restart even when it shouldnt. I give this re-install a try. Its a pain in the ass because the security was tight configured.

Beside the restarting problem I still think Avast! is one of the best scanners around!
Thanks for all efforts guys

I'm not sure silent here means do not restart. I think it means that user won't be warned about the update (asked), there won't have screen pop-ups, etc.
