Questions about Home vs. Pro avast!
« on: December 01, 2005, 01:02:32 AM »
Hi, again it’s me  :)
I have a series of questions about Home vs. Pro avast!, but I will go once at a time. Although my concerns are not of urgent nature I would appreciate an answer.

To the point:
You have THOROUGH scan option in Home edition (for On-demand scan) that matches (SCAN “RECOGNIZE FILE TYPES BY THEIR CONTENT “+SCAN ALL FILES) option in Pro Edition?

My question is does THOROUGH scan in Free Edition imply TEST WHOLE FILES & IGNORE VIRUS TARGETING option from Pro??

Thorough scan option is exactly the same as in Pro version:

But since there is not THOROUGH scan named button in Pro Edition does that confirms what I asked earlier:
THOROUGH scan = TEST ALL & WHOLE FILES BY THEIR CONTENT & IGNORE VIRUS TARGETING

I'm sorry but did not implied that I was referring to Simple User Interface in Home Edition & Enhanced User Interface in Pro

What do you mean there is no Thorough Scann button in Pro version... take a look at screenshot a bit closer.

In Professional version the thorough scan is configured in different tab of settings that you can activate when right click a Task and check Advanced configuration.
Packers page allow the configuration of all, or each one of the archive file type available in avast.
Other options are there too.
Of course, the Professional version is better, more configurable and more flexible than Home. The opposite won't be smart  8)

Thanks, but I knew that  :)
Misunderstanding. Here is the thing:
I use following options in Pro
TEST ALL & WHOLE FILES BY THEIR CONTENT & IGNORE VIRUS TARGETING
Since my trial is expiring soon I'm interested in Home avast!
Therefore:
When I use Home avast option THOROUGH for scanning, will it contain all te rule sets from Pro mentioned above (TEST ALL & WHOLE FILES BY THEIR CONTENT & IGNORE VIRUS TARGETING)??  :)

Yes for common files (non-archive). avast Pro has more unpackers, so more archive files could be scanned.
If I'm wrong, I hope someone from Alwil corrects me.

Is it true that In the Pro edition that in the Stardard Shield that it scans archives files? and that in the Home edition it does not? Its that important to have real-time protection?

OK, but what about
On-Demand scan in Pro Edition, you can set manually on the ‘Packers Page’ which archives to scan (although default is to scan executable files).

In Free Edition you’re only possibility is to enable or disable ‘SCAN ARCHIVES’ option.
What files/archives does include either possibility??

I know that for Resident scanning in Home Edition you can't set to scan archives,
but for On-Demand scan you must be able to (checking the box 'scan archives')??

Correct me if I'm wrong,
but without that On-Demand scan would be a joke?!

I won't call it joke. Just that virus inside of archive files can't be executed (run) and infect a computer.
When the files are extracted from the archive, they'll be caught by the Standard Shield provider.
But, I understand, if you can't sleep with a zip file with virus inside of your computer, just sleeping there... then, you must run a thorough scan  8)
