Repeating Avast alert pop up
« on: October 31, 2015, 02:54:28 PM »
Hi,
Please help. An avast alert pop up informing me of a blocked webpage keeps coming up. I've clicked on MORE DETAILS on the pop up and it tells me it's an URL:mal and recommends I upgrade for fuller protection. I clicked on UPGRADE NOW and read about the upgrade. As I didn't want to upgrade I just clicked to close the window. The pop up alert is still coming up every few seconds. What can I do to stop it, bar upgrading?
Thanks,
Sam

Is this on the same website ?  Could you post a screenshot of the alert

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Select  additions at the bottom
  • Press Scan button.

  • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please attach both logs generated.

Hi Essexboy,
Thank you for responding to my posting. As requested, I am attaching a photo of the pop up and the 2 files FRST and Addition obtained by the scan.
Sincerely,
Sam

Hi,

I've just run the fixlist with FRST and here's the log.
It is working as I haven't seen the pop up since.
Will proceed with the AdwCleaner now and let you know when it's done.

Thanks
Sam

Hi Essexboy,

I've done the AdwCleaner. Here's the log.
All seems well. You're brilliant. Thanks a bunch.
Is there anything else to be done?

I lived in Hornchurch for 30 years. Are you in that area?

Regards,
Sam

Hi,

How nice to know that you were in Hornchurch too. Lucky you, Cornwall is one of the nicest areas of the UK. I'm on the South Coast near Eastbourne. It can't compare with Cornwall but at least it's by the sea. I do go back to Hornchurch to see friends and neighbours as it's not too far away (2 hours by car).

My computer is working well without problems. I think that it's even a little faster booting up.

Could you tell what was the problem? I couldn't understand why if the malware was blocked, and when scans using Avast and Windows Defender were clear why it was repeating the alert pop up.

I'm very grateful for your help. Thanks again.
Sam

Hi,
As advised, I have run Delfix, Cryptoprevent, Malwarebytes and Unchecky.
Malwarebytes found some PUP Vosteran (attachment) which I have deleted.

Thank you also for the link to Best Practice to avoid security problems. It was an eye-opener and helpful.

I am very grateful to you that everything is running well with the computer now.

Sincerely,
Sam

They were orphan registry keys that MBAM found and were of no real consequence
