Avast service is not running 10.3.2507
« on: November 02, 2015, 03:40:56 PM »
I've just updated to the new program version 10.3.2507
and rondomly the avast service stops.
If I click on "start now" the avast service starts, but after some time it stops again.
I've sent the support package, this is the name file:
20151102_1428_A8SMQ_2725381094.zip
I'm going to try a clean install in the next day.

Yes I have also the same issue occurring, on windows 7 64bit,

Program version - 10.3.2507
Virus Defs ver = 151102-0
Number of Definitions - 3,578,215

I have tried a repair, and same issue occurs. I have done a remove and fresh install and I have had this occur once since. waiting now to see if it reoccurs.

Avast has been fine for a while but seems like this issue has started in the past week.

It's a problem with the 2507 version.  Avast has pulled it and is now offering 2505 version.  I'm having users with the same issue.  I'm having them uninstall 2507 from their PC - then re-install the older version.

Thanks for sharing the info, Jim! Can you clarify how you went about downloading the working 2505 version? Is the web (dashboard) installer version 2505 now?

We saw the new update being offered today and installed it on two "early adoption" users. So far one of them is coming back with the red X and background service not running error. The other machine seems fine. Both running 10.3.2507. On the affected machine, the status of Avast is green at first after booting and after some time the service stops.

If we check for update to the program it comes as up to date which surprising given that the fix is to revert to 2505. Why not make an "update" say 2508 that is simply the 2505 version but under a new number and save us the uninstall - reinstall trouble?

Go to your console and download the install (click "Add new device").  That should download the older 2505 version.

Did you uninstal Avast and reboot before reinstalling? Had to do it here on a couple of machines and now all good again.

Uninstalling the bad version with the service that does not want to run, and getting the downloader from the Dashboard installs 2015.10.2.2505 for us. My understanding is there is a 2015.10.3.2505 version that does not have the issue of .2507. The Avast Program update show 2015.10.3.2505 version as available but attempting to update shows "Already up to date". Can someone clarify?

My conversation with Avast support suggests that 10.3.2505 and 10.2.2505 are the same version - just renumbered.  They should have released 10.2.2505 as 10.3.2508 to solve the problem - as the 10.3.2507 bad versions would have "upgraded" to the older 2505 renamed as 2508.

Jim85, thanks for sharing the info you got from the chat.

As recent as just now the .2507 clients we kept are not reporting .2508 version available. So they seem to still be working on proper fix. Strange as it is, we have two .2507 that do not have the problem and on two the service stops randomly.

Let’s hope they sort and document internally this "emergency revert" process so in the future if a (real major) problem happens they have a good and fast way to make available an older working version re-numbered as update. Having the AV stop randomly is bad but I am happy they are learning on this and not on say an issue causing blue screens in windows.

I agree.  If the build was withdrawn after official public release, a replacement should have either gone up a revision, or back to the original which was 10.2.2505.  If they are the same binary as suggested above, my own suspicion is someone made a boo-boo in the rollback data by mistyping as 10.3.2505 and rather than make the issues worse it was left as-is.

Currently my installs all complain a new version 10.3.2505 is available, but won't upgrade to it.  Probably because the 10.2.2505 install is the same so there's actually nothing to do.  Still the console complains and will until a newer build (which I can live with).

It sounds like you are really on top of this and in direct discussions with Avast support, Jim.  Thanks for your input on this, very helpful.

I'll say again; non-staggered automatic application updates in a production environment are evil IMHO.  Useful, but evil :)
