@frg
Your last remark seems to confirm what I am experiencing.

My computer (Windows 10 64bit) uses an Intel Q6600, that is a respectable quad core CPU (even though the nowadays processors are way more powerful) with 8 GB RAM.
Yet since installing this last version, avast is constantly using between 27 and 35% of the CPU resources, even when not any program is opened (beyond my utilities).

Any idea or suggestion?

It is such an enormous jump in resources usage, from avast 2015 (that ran at about 10% top), that frankly, I am beginning to think of searching a less voracious security suite!

I check back here when I have time but I'm sorry to be slow to reply to you as I'm mostly concerned with keeping my older duo core system functioning and felt others would be better at dealing with your concern for slowness in your much faster computer.  I have turned off Hardware Acceleration and many other features of Avast to increase the speed of my older system. By doing this I have returned some speed back. Bottom line for me is if my computer is too slow I can't use it anymore.

I too am concerned about these performance hits on my other newer systems and for this reason I too am beginning to look for a faster less bloated AV but combining too many changes makes it harder to tell what is slowing things down. I have not tried windows 10 yet for this reason and I have seen many post that say they can't even get Avast and win 10 to work together. I'm glad that at least for you that win10 an Avast are working together. Try turning off any features you don't use. I do believe in my case turning off the Hardware Acceleration did the most to restore basic speed to my older system.

Thanks for your input.

I have no time to spare to experiment and fine tune.
This is why, for the moment, I have regressed to avast 2015, that is working fine in my configuration.

I will check if future updates of avast 2016 are more resource efficient.
If not, it will be "bye-bye avast".

I also use Avast Free (latest version) on my Toshiba Laptop (Celeron at 1.8Ghz and 4GB RAM) which runs Windows 10 Home 64 bit. It is doing very well on the Toshiba. And also on my old Dell Dimension 8200 with a P4 at 1.8Ghz and 512MB RAM .. This machine is running Windows XP Professional With SP3 and all other updates that came out after SP3 (nVidia Video card) It also runs fine on this machine (but I really should add more RAM to that old Dell, if I can find some RAMBUS memory sticks for it)

@bob3160,

You used to have a lot of YouTube links for various Avast tutorials.
One I found useful was the "custom install" one.
I want to uninstall/clean from Avast 9 and go to 2016.
Do you have video yet showing 2016, the custom page, etc ?

If I understand you correctly, NG worked prior to updating Avast however you also upgraded to Windows 10 which could have corrupted Avast files.
 A "Clean Install" of the Avast software will/ has solved many similar issues.

I did an over-install of my already existing Avast, with no uninstall. That activated the NG environment. Somehow it got left out of my install at some point.

BLUE SCREEN ERROR
« Reply #201 on: November 19, 2015, 08:42:42 PM »
Updated Avast on a Win7 SP1 64-bit system.  When Avast rebooted the system to complete the installation, a blue screen error was issued.  That machine had never had a blue screen error before.

Here is the error when upgrading to 11.1.2241 (with definitions 151119-1):

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:   BlueScreen
  OS Version:   6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3

Additional information about the problem:
  BCCode:   1000007e
  BCP1:   FFFFFFFFC0000005
  BCP2:   FFFFF88001745FA1
  BCP3:   FFFFF880035E7208
  BCP4:   FFFFF880035E6A60
  OS Version:   6_1_7601
  Service Pack:   1_0
  Product:   768_1

Avast seems to be working on that machine (the icon appears in the system tray and a Smart Scan completed successfully), but how do I know whether or not something got messed up during the Avast installation which generated the Blue Screen error?

NG is a bit weird by design. In the past it started "compiling" soon after installation. Now you have to leave PC idle and NG command tool will appear among processes until avastVirtualBox appears and NG disappears. Very confusing, there should be a progress bar that lets user know it's preparing something and how far it is.

The password feature is, I believe, only available in the Pay version.
<snip>

As far as I'm aware, the free version of avast has a limited function set for the Avast Passwords feature - I don't know anywhere that states in detail what is available for free and the premium options in the paid avast versions.

Avast passwords is in all editions so also in free avast. Basic functionality is for free including synchronisation with mobile devices (iOS, Android). There are paid features, which are making usage of avast passwords more comfortable, you can see comparison of both editions of Avast Passwords at the bottom of this page https://www.avast.com/passwords

I installed the new version on my WinXP svcpack 3 computer and it is using 99% of my memory constantly.
Should I try reinstalling?
-------
I tried to repair installation and still had same problem.
In Avast 'Statistics' it shows the following files being repeatedly scanned:
http://192.168.2.1:36477/ctl/cmnIFcfg
http://192.168.2.1:36477/ctl/cmnIFcfg
http://192.168.2.1:36477/ctl/cmnIFcfg
http://192.168.2.1:36477/ctl/cmnIFcfg
http://192.168.2.1:36477/ctl/IPconn
-------
I unistalled avast, rebooted, ran malwarebytes, ran ccleaner to fix registry issues, downloaded AvastFree from link provided in this original post. Seems to be fixed and back to normal.

I don't see anything for AOS to scan either ??? You need to be on a website for AOS to show anything.

Attach the setup log so it can be looked at.
What AV was on your system prior to installing Avast and how was the other AV removed ???
