Avast Updates: From AEA server or from the Internet?
« on: October 30, 2015, 07:41:10 PM »
Hi All,

We have Avast Endpoint Protected deployed on around 800 PCs so far, with more to follow. We are having an issue where, during certain times of day, our internet usage for the district is spiking from around 100mbs to 500 or 600mbs. During our preliminary research, the spikes appear to occur around the time that some workstations are downloading Avast updates. However, we have AEA setup, and we have our clients pointing to that server to get the updates. When you go in and manually tell the client to get an update, it has our AEA server IP address listed as the server. Does that mean that we are getting the updates directly from that server, or could the computers still be getting their updates from the Internet? Is there a way to check and see where the updates were downloaded from?

Some more info. Our ISP says that the traffic is going to Akamai, which I know is a software distribution service that a lot of companies use, including Microsoft for their Windows Updates. Does Avast use this for their updates?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Another bit of info. The machines that are are having the download spikes have Windows Updates turned off, and at the time of the spikes (5:45am) there is nobody using the machines.
