Removing SecureLine VPN without removing Avast (for Mac)
« on: November 05, 2015, 05:03:55 PM »
I like having Avast Mac Security 2015 on my Mac.  I realize it's free, and that's cool. I pay for the Premiere edition on my PCs, and would gladly pay for Avast on my Mac.

HOWEVER....

I don't like the fact that Avast Mac Security 2015 ships with, and automatically starts, SecureLine VPN and hangs out in my Mac's Menu Bar.  Whether or not this application is in use (I've never used it), it's still hang out.  I'd like to remove it.

If I "Quit" the application from the Menu Bar, it always comes back after next reboot/login.

Can I remove SecureLine VPN from my Mac without removing the (useful) Avast Mac Security 2015?

Thanks!

Thanks for the link.

I did a fairly extensive search and came back with a bunch of posts that were talking about PCs, or how it's "not installed on Macs" when clearly, it's installed on mine.  The link you shared did not come back when I did a search for SecureLine, or at least it didn't come back in the first page or two for me.

Now, when I try to uninstall, I'm getting the following error:

"Uninstallation error - Communication with a privileged helper tool failed."

Thoughts?

Also, as a recommendation to Avast (specifically the Mac team):

All of my Mac third-party applications that use real estate on the toolbar have a "Preferences..." button right on the icon.  If I click the Menu Bar Icon for, say, Dropbox, Google Drive or Day One, they each have a Gear icon, which pulls out to "Preferences..." that I can load.  Some of my Menu Bar icons even have a direct line into "Preferences..." which I think is the default Mac application behavior (think: Time Machine, Bluetooth, or Displays). ALL System Menu Bar icons contain "Preferences..." so, my recommendation would be to add that to any application which uses that real estate.  (Avast too!)

The link was the first hit in my search.

I am not a mac person and have no idea about the error.
I'm pretty sure someone else will be able to help you with it.

You'd think, with my Google-fu, that I would use Google instead of thinking that the web-site's built-in search will actually help me find what I'm looking for.  :)

I am not a mac person and have no idea about the error.
I'm pretty sure someone else will be able to.

No worries.  Hopefully someone has an answer.  Thanks!

I hardly use the build-in search option on webboards.
Google gives me almost always better results.
And you can still search on a specific webboard if you use the "site:www.website.com" option.

The latest version of Avast for Mac does NOT automatically install SecureLine.

Can I remove SecureLine VPN from my Mac without removing the (useful) Avast Mac Security 2015?

There is a "Uninstall Secureline" menu item in the SecureLine application menu.
