Sorry for asking such a basic question, but I'm new to Avast (and MACs) ---- what does "Scan Secured Connections" mean?

It means whether HTTPS (in case of Webshield) or IMAPS/POP3S (in case of mailshield) protocols are
scanned by the shields. Generally it should be enabled as malware does not distinguish whether the
transport channel is encrypted or not, but such scanning has some "side effects" which may be problematic
in some cases and that's why it is configurable.
