Avast VPN Leaking
« on: November 23, 2015, 04:38:18 AM »
I am a licensed Avast VPN user and I thought I had confidence in your software.  I ran a DNS Leaktest today and found that I was leaking to IBM and to Credit Suisse in Switzerland!!!!  Why do I pay all this money for faulty software???  I installed a leak test fix that I found in your forum and it didn't do anything.

What can you do to resolve this issue?

Hmmm.  I would like a more detailed explanation.  Not a question.

I was lead to believe that no one could track me and record the sites I visit because I had this VPN.

DNSLeak test says that the listed IP addresses are able to tell where I go online and are able to collect that information.  Whether they use it or not is unknown.

Please elaborate.

Thanks Asyn,

But the link says "For users of SecureLine VPN on Windows 8, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 operating systems, it is advised to disable the "smart multi-homed name resolution" service. This service is enabled by default and is intended to optimize DNS queries and improve performance. However, when enabled it leaves you vulnerable to DNS hijacking as well as DNS leak (which can result in web activity monitoring) even when using a VPN."

It's warnings on Win 10 makes me wary to upgrade.  (what else is in the Windows 10 upgrade that we aren't told about?)

Not sure if it will encumber Windows 7 and possibly screw up performance.
I don't want to install something that is going to mess me up or carry with it back doors meant for spooks and therefore eventually to hackers.

I was wondering if windows was actively allowing doors for activity monitoring and it appears they are.
I used to work for a bank data processor and although it is quite secure, I know just enough to be leery of what hackers are able to do.
While I love being able to do my banking online, I just hate this possible lack of privacy and excessive government intrusion.

Have you any info or thoughts on TOR?  Any news good or bad?

The problem of the fix is also that does not work with the "Home" editions... since the gpedit.msc is not present! I tried to include it manually, but could not start the console anyway... any idea on how to fix it?

also since it is a "risky service" shouldn't be deactivated (opt out) from Avast? ::)
