avast affects my download speed
« on: November 24, 2015, 08:15:35 PM »
Fact:

With AVAST PREMIER enabled my download speed is 150Mbps. With AVAST PREMIER disabled my download speed is 305Mbps.

The question is ... why? I'm beguinning to be fed up with all this s**t.

Much appreciated.

is it avast that fool the speedometer or is the speed difference real?

find a big file 200 - 300 - 400mb and download, take the time, then do it again with avast disabled and time it again

For me there isn't any real difference even with the web shield enabled. The major difference is my broadband package is up to 38Mbps download and 2Mbps upload. This is Fibre Optic cable to the cabinet and normal copper cable to the house (about 200 yards).

My average when tested usually works out at 37Mbps down and 1.7Mbps up.

Some considerable time ago avast mentioned that there should be no appreciable difference up to 100Mbps after that the scanning will be the bottle neck. I don't know were avast stands right now regarding that previous statement.

So your on very fast connection, so the above may be what is happening. You could try this and see if it makes a difference - avastUI > Settings > Active Protection > Web Shield > Customise > Main Settings - and uncheck the 'Use Intelligent stream scanning.'

That may make a difference for your browsing, but I don't see it making a difference in speedtest.net check as the file size is relatively small - a possibly better test is as Pondus mentioned download and test a large file - with and without the Use Intelligent stream scanning enabled.

EDIT: test run with Use Intelligent stream scanning disabled, not a huge difference, but closer to mu theoretical maximums.

Thank you guys for your answers. I've carefully read everyone of them. The intelligent active scanning has been disabled. I ran a speed test, getting up to 25Mbps more. Also I've read https://www.avast.com/en-eu/faq.php?article=AVKB203#artTitle. As a matter of fact, there's no real difference browsing at 150Mbps or 300Mbps. My internet experience is identical in both cases. So my conclusion is that for 100Mbps internet connections and higher, Avast scanning converges / crashes down in a kind of bottle neck. There's nothing to do about it. I hope Avast will sort this issue out in a recent future.

Best wishes ;)

You're welcome.

We avast users are with you in regard of speeding things up, but we are also jealous of your 305Mbps connection. Whilst mine is relatively fast for the UK, I still remember my days on dial-up and that keeps me grounded about only having 37Mbps connection.

#DavidR I totally agree with you. I still remember my old and good dial-up times. We had up to 32Kbps and it was astonishing! In Spain the fiber optic is widely spread, getting up to 300/300Mbps for a reasonable Price (€40,00, £28,19). Your issue is the copper cable. Hope you get more speed pretty soon.
#Asyn No I didn't (except the deactivation of the intelligent active scanning).

Thank u guys once again. Wish you all the best.

I think it will be some time before we get fibre directly to the home, it is very surprising that I/we get this good a connection as I live in a village which is 9Km from the telephone exchange.
