Stripping Email and preventing File Saving
« on: November 27, 2015, 11:26:04 PM »
I've installed Avast Free after many years absence.

It's on an old XP box, no other AV applications.

It appears to strip the body from outbound email even though it is set to not scan outbound, but I don't think that's what's actually happening because...

it's also preventing me from saving spreadsheet, text or other files.

I temporarily solved the email problem by adding an exclusion to the file monitor for nsmsg.html (using Thunderbird there).  So I think the email and file save problems are the same -- it's preventing some file from being saved that is a prerequisite for sending the email.

I've found some old references to Outlook but nothing that points to a solution in my case.

I know it is Avast because if I disable it, all functionality returns to normal.

Any ideas?

I can't be adding an Exclusion for every file I ever want to save....

I got two similar reports in the Japanese forum. Both users use Win7.
It seems files are randomly got locked and cannot be used (accessed) until reboot or add to exclusions.

I can't reproduce it on my machine, though.
Desktop: Win10 Pro 22H2 64bit / Core i5-7400 3.0GHz / 32GB RAM / Avast 23 Premium Beta(Icarus) / Comodo Firewall
Notebook: Win10 Pro 22H2 64bit / Core i5-3340M 2.7GHz / 12GB RAM / Avast 23 Free / Windows Firewall Control
Server: Win11 Pro 23H2 64bit / Core i3-4010U 1.7GHz / 12GB RAM / Avast One 23 Essential

Current version: 11.1.2245
XP 32 SP3
Comodo Firewall
On the XP I used Outpost Security Suite Pro.

However I have the same issues on my Windows 10 box. With file shield enabled I suddenly cannot save spreadsheet files. Disabling file shield solves this problem on both the XP and the Win 10 boxes. The only way to send email via Thunderbird is to disable Mail Shield -- rather it sends the email but strips the message body completely.

What information can I generate to help trouble shoot?

What happens if you remove Comodo completely ?
