Why does ashMaiSv connect to a pop3 port on an unknown machine?
« on: December 10, 2005, 03:12:43 PM »

Hi, I keep getting popups from avast 4.6 Home Edition that a connection to port 110 on 82.173.58.141 timed out. But why does this happen? The popup claims that a java process tries to connect to the pop3 port but when I check with netstat and currports (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html) it is ashMaiSv.exe that tries to connect to the remote machine.
I copied the following from currports:
Start snippet:
ashMaiSv.exe   2328   TCP   4279      ***.***.***.***   110   pop3   82.173.58.141   ip141-58-173-82.dyndsl.versatel.nl   Last Ack   C:\Program Files\Tools\File Management\Anti virus\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe   avast! Antivirus   avast! e-Mail Scanner Service   4, 6, 729, 0   ALWIL Software   12/7/2005 5:21:16 PM   NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM   avast! Mail Scanner   A
End snippet:
I haven't found any way to select which servers/ports this mail scanner should access, but I don't want it to access 82.173.58.141:110.
How can I stop avast from doing this?

Do you happen to be Using Azureus?
What java application/process?
What is your firewall?

If you do then a forum search for Azureus should show that this problem is related to using the email ports, which are monitored by ashMaiSv.exe and because it isn't using the email protocol the content isn't recognised and can cause the timeout.
