Try using the full off-line installation file and not the online stub-installer.

Get the direct download link for avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe file from the first post of this topic, https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=179855.0.

Not sure if I should post this here or in the other (general) section for issues with Avast. Anyway, I downloaded the latest Avast (2016.11.1.2245) 3 days ago. I am using IE 11 (Version 11.0.9600.18161; update version 11.0.27, KB 3124275) with Win 8.1. My IE 11 now crashes intermittently. The only solution is to open Task Manager and close IE and then restart (clicking on the "X" on the top right hand corner does not work after IE crashes). Upon reopening IE 11, things work fine again until the next crash. I was using another antivirus before and never had this issue. I have not yet used Chrome often enough to know if it occurs also with it.

A few questions:

(1) I thought someone had suggested that this was an issue specific to IE and seemed to be related to the Avast plug in. Is this the case?

(2) If I disable the plug in (just to see if it is the cause of the IE crash), will it compromise my security? Does the plug in prevent phishing (since clicking "settings" on the Avast Online security icon on the top right corner) brings up several things such as the web reputation of the site, phishing, etc. ?

Thanks

1. I can't answer that as I don't have IE11 on either system.

2. The Avast On-line Security extension/add-on adds some extra to the main internet protection, the Web Shield. Disabling it shouldn't really be a major issue.

Hi DavidR: Thanks for your response to my previous post about Avast 2016 possibly causing IE 11 to crash intermittently.

I am nervous about disabling the Avast add on (even just to test if it is causing IE 11 to crash) because I had noticed when I click on "Settings" in the Avast online security icon, it suggested that it might have functions in preventing phishing and also attempts to redirect an online search to an illegitimate website. These would seem to be rather important functions.

Does anyone know if disabling the add on in IE 11 does or does not disable the anti phishing or anti redirection functions of Avast 2016?

The Web Shield is the main web protection - lets assume that you ended up at a phishing site, the web shield still gives full protection as the sites are scanned.

The easiest way would be to uninstall the Avast On-line Security in avast.
Control Panel > Programs & Features > Avast Antivirus > Change - from the next screen choose Modify. This takes you into the avast setup and you can uncheck the Browser Security (that is what the Avast On-line Security add-on is called in the setup). OK your way out and reboot that should then remove it from all installed browsers.

Now you can test IE11 without it.

Hi everyone,

I used to use Avast but stopped using it as I had a lot of issues with it in the past.
However I would like to start using Avast again, but I would like to know is Avast FREE compatible with Windows 10 Home?

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thank you so much in advance.

In these few days I decided to experiment, to walk through the "different" sites. And very sorry that dare preobresti Internet security. Yes, your free version is quite good in conjunction with a good firewall. But the Internet security simply ignored so much trouble that I honestly regretted that bought your paid program. More than 7 threats. Discovered then passing system HitmanPro_x64 and doctor Web. Scanning themselves Avast (on the most stringent settings) to no avail. And it's sad.) Then brutally unnerving spam additional packages that are unnecessary to me. The program gives the impression of a weak antavirusnoy utility. Lord as I think you need to change dramatically and hard approach to the project. Otherwise you will not raise your paid services. A good and will stay free utility. By the way, I would like to pay for your package is full of the best of your free utility, and my respect for you, in the free field of your utility is quite good. I sincerely wish your team still raise commercial products, well, at least until the Kaspersky or Bit Defender. Sincerely, your user.

Update on Win 7 stopped computer from booting.  I've tried pretty much every tip I've found on the web - uninstalled and reinstalled, uininstalled with standard uninstaller, with uninstall utility, with uninstall tool, with Revo.  - no luck.

Have had to revert to pre-'update' restore point.

Lots of stuff still in registry.

Eventually (two days), have given up and moved to alternative product.

As long-term user, would quite like to use Avast, but now impossible.  When I have time, I'd like to clear all Avast references from registry and maybe try to install again from scratch.

Any particular suggestions?
