Unable to download21.avast.com update
« on: December 07, 2005, 02:45:15 AM »
I am unable to get the download21.avast.com because of a Zone Alarm problem (at least I think it is a Zone Alarm problem.) for the first time and all other updates took place without any problems.

Can you help me get the download21.avast.com past Zone Alarm (if Zone Alarm is the problem.). Thanks.

Ensure that avast.setup isn't blocked by ZA this may show up as avast! antivirus update (or similar wording), check the details of that entry for the path, etc and you should see avast.setup as the file name.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

All I saw in the Zone Alarm Alert And Logs was this Entry Detail: Packet sent from xxxxxxxxxx to xxxxxxxxxxx ICMP echo request (Ping) was blocked.

I saw this message in Zone Alarm Alert And Logs after Avast tried and failed to update itself. Could that ping be from Avast trying to download the download21.avast.com update?

Thank you for you help, David.

Yes, it could.
Can you manually update avast now or not?
avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds. If there isn't, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band. If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.
Some of this settings could be configurated different, I posted the default values of the avast4.ini file.

Tech is right.  Also please read this.

If you don't like Avast! using ICMP so often, 3) and 4) explain ways to omit the server checking process depending on the type of your connections.

Avast not updating part 2

I've added Avast to Zone Alarm's Trusted Zone and I hope I can update after a restart.

Look for a follow up post in about a hour. In the meantime if you have had the same problem and found a solution, please share it with me.

Thanks.  :)

I'm still not making any progress in connecting with Avast to get the updates and I'm getting the not connecting to server pop up.

I tried to get Zone Alarm to accept packets from Avast but that did not work either

Help me. Thanks and Happy Holidays

Which program exactly?

Into the firewall settings, the following programs should be allowed to connect:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

Don't need rights to connect:
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)

But only C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup (avast! Update executable) is due to updates  ;)

Hi FrVi1,
Unfortunately, sometimes the only solution to ZA's refusal to allow a program access, (once you've denied access to that program) is to
Totally un-install ZA. Reboot and then Re-install ZA.
Once that's done, you can then make sure that you allow access to your legit. programs when asked for permission by ZA.
I didn't say it was easy or fun, but this will work. :)

I'll try this and if that doesn't work, I'm off to majorgeeks.com in search of another free anti virus program.

Thanks.

When avast! is at fault, blame avast!. In this case, it has nothing to do with avast!
You've told your firewall to block a certain application which it has done. Unfortunately, that application
was the one needed to update avast.
Unless you exercise greater care in which programs to allow and which programs to deny access to in your firewall program, this same problem
could happen to any program or service.
ZA gives you 2 options in granting permission. If you check the box for ZA to remember the decision you make, that decision is permanent.
If you don't check the box, you only either give permission or deny permission for a single instance.
So if you aren't sure, don't check the little box;D ;D
