Avast Free 2016: Settings > Update > program
« on: November 26, 2015, 09:15:39 PM »
After updating to the new version (11.1.2241) two days ago I wanted to check today for new definitions and program versions manually using the option menu: settings > update > program

Definition update works (it says "all up to date"), but the program update is buggy:
When I click on it, the program will pop up the promo window of Avast 2016 offering the new Avast 2016 which is already installed... Yesterday, when I first tried the update menu, it worked, that means it checked for a new version (like definition update) and said "all up to date", but today, it not even tries to check for a new version, but is popping up the free + paid versions window.

Also, after installing Avast 2016 it asked me twice to restart after updating and the AvastVBoxSVC.exe only worked after rebooting twice or three times...
Why do you change so often the program and the interface? In my opinion, the old versions befor 2014 were better than now...

In my opinion, Avast is getting too bloated, it is beginning to remind me of NORTON Antivirus, which I really hated after 2007 and I never tried again after that.

The update saying that there is a new version is a known bug.
Could be it is already solved in the latest beta.

Why do you change so often the program..
Because the bad guys keep developing new malware.

The old versions before 2014 where good, but they would not stand a change against nowadays malware and attacks.

If you can stop the bad guys from creating new things, avast would never have to be updated again ;)

I don't really want to install the beta version. Will the program offer the update some day when there is a real update without that bug? My setting is: ask when a new update is available...

Or have all users to update manually when the next update is released?

I don't know if all the new features are good or necessary, some people tell about unusable PCs after updating/upgrading (freezing, etc.)

Have a nice evening!

You will get a notice that a new version is available and can then update when you are ready.
To update to the current version and decide which add-ons to choose, see if this is of help to you:

Today I got the notice of the new version.

After updating to v11.1.2245 AvastVBoxSVC.exe is no longer active, I tried to restart 2 x but this service doesn't start... the rest seems to work normally.

BUG?

Update:
I have checked in windows control panel... AvastVBox is set as "manually" (see attached image).
Should I set it to automatic? I hoped that Avast would control what is necessary...

Perform a repair of avast first.
If that doesn't solve it, perform a clean installation.

Let us know if if the problem is solved or not.

I started a "full scan" and during this (it took more than 2 hours), AvastVBoxSVC.exe was started.

So maybe the service "AvastVirtualBox Interface" is always started manually by the program? Can you look in your windows control panel? I don't like to do repair/clean install if not necessary...
Thank you.

Also, I started LockNote.exe and closed it (saved the modified, encrypted file) after working with it and the AvastVBoxSVC.exe worked then and started "Avast! NG front end" (see "Avast NG.jpg"), but it didn't show the DeepScreen-Window telling me to wait, like it used before... it just blocked the program LockNote, which didn't react anymore for 20 seconds.

If someone could reproduce this, it would be kind... search for Steganos LockNote in the web, it is a small encrypted note (like an encrypted Editor).

Update:
After restarting Win 7, AvastVBoxSVC.exe is now active on startup (but is still a "manually started" service in windows).
I think it was the same thing with the first release (11.1.2241) of Avast Free 2016: I told you that AvastVirtualBox didn't start with windows in the beginning. Maybe the first "full scan" triggers that Avast starts this service with windows.

I suppose it is a BUG, but I will leave it as it is now...

Update 2:
When I use Steganos LockNote after restarting windows, "Avast NG front end" doesn't start this time, but instead Avast shows a notice that it is analyzing (see attached "Bug.jpg"). So the SAME procedure triggers different actions on Avast, I think it is really BUGGY! I like it less the more the guys develop it...
