Update makes firewall unable to start - Urgent!
« on: February 04, 2016, 08:12:17 PM »
Got a 3 comp x 3 year #Internet Security"  licence - Used Avast for >10 years, but I'm giving up now...  :'(

I'm at the university, where I use a dual boot MacBook Pro running 32 Bit XP.

Acctually no problem at all, for the last 5 years, minimum!

My latest Avast update to 11.1.2253 inactivates the Avast Firewall and makes it impossible
to start.

Running the Repair program thingy makes Avast complain about "incompatable antivirus software -
please uninstall - Outpost".

The dual boot machine has never run the Agnium Outpost Firewall, ever. But I've used it
on other machines many years ago...   Running an Outpost removal tool from Agnium has
not changed anything. (How could it..?)

Anyway, I'm desperate because I simply haven't got the time to mess around with this.  :P

* Is there a way to roll back that latest program update?

* Any chanse of a clean install acctually solving this?

I really don't want to waste time reinstalling, if it doesn't solve the issue.

I'll have to use this machine at uni tomorrow and don't want to be in that
enviroment without a functioning firewall.

Help!  :(

Unfortunately, there's not a "quick fix" as identifying conflicts and removing old software remnants can take time.
Obviously, something on the OS (old Reg Key or Program data etc.) from Outpost is being flagged by the Avast Repair function.
A clean install may help although I'm not sure that is going to address whatever is being flagged from Outpost.
Manually checking/Searching the Registry and Program Folders for 'Outpost' or 'Agnitum' may turn something up. :)

Thanks schmidthouse for help and moral support!  :)

You were right about everything you said. There acctually were some old
Agnium Outpost reg keys lurking in the registry, which I had to remove manually.

I can't be too upset with Avast, because it was only doing i's job, I suppose...

After manually cleaning the registry and reinstalling Avast from scratch it's now
working, and with its firewall up!

The thing is I'm currently wrestling with a 4 th computer running free Avast, but which
won't accept my new one year licence. That's what made me (and makes me) hostile against
Avast.  :-[

Anyway, thanks for prompt support and moral encurragement!   :)
