Avast corrupt Mac Mail?

installed free Avast and found Mac Mail constantly searching for new mail and fan spinning and Mac Mail consuming CPU time
uninstalled free Avast and Mac Mail problem has gone away
using Mac OS El Capitan

was this coincidence?
or
have others observed same?

was going to re-install Avast to prove the issue but guess I will not do that
