Does Avast FREE for Mac 2015 close down when I close the Avast window?

I run Avast FREE Mac Security 2015 on my 2013 iMac.   I have it set to open at Login.   It works well, and I would recommend it to anyone.

However.....I have 2 questions...

1. When I log in to my computer, the Avast window appears, telling me 'You Are Protected'. Thank you Avast, but I find the actual presence of this window annoying.  If I close this window, it seems like the program closes too, leaving me with no protection.  So, when I close the window, does Avast actually close down, or is the program still working in the background?

2.  Is there any way to disable the window from appearing in the first place but still leaving me protected by Avast?

You may try testing wit EICAR test file

I don't see why I need Eicar.
And the Avast FAQs don't seem to answer my question.

With the EICAR test file you can test if the av is working or not.

You don't need it .... It is to test and answer your question, if you want to find out?
