Hamachi
« on: December 26, 2005, 07:25:16 PM »
Has anyone heard of Hamachi?

It seems to a "zero-configuration" VPN service.

Any thoughts/comments on the security of Hamachi?

Haha, that's good my friend... working hard never hurts... unless you have to work on construction and then one heavy brick drops down from the 7th floor right on your head, haha  ;D  ;D Then it hurts....

Anyway, this program looks really interesting. I would also like to see some feedbacks.

Cheers !

Hi Xistenz,

VPN is a safe service, use it at work. Good to hear from you again. Long time since you last showed around. Baaie veul geluk..

Cybersecurity is more of an attitude than anything else. Avast Evangelists.

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

Hamachi - it looks like a wonderful and powerful little application. See here, conversation between Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson:

SERIES:      Security Now!
EPISODE:      #18
DATE:      December 15, 2005
TITLE:      Hamachi Rocks!
SPEAKERS:   Steve Gibson & Leo Laporte

Trust me, they had nothing else to say about it but wonderful things... it looks like perfect utility, they even called it (many times) a part of the holy grail. Another fine piece of software from Canada (Vancouver)... really nice to hear.

It looks like it's recommended by grc.com (ShieldsUp!!). See here:

question remains is this going to be better than open source secured tunels ? (ie like http://sourceforge.net/projects/sslexplorer/ )

Just this part at the beginning of their conversation tells a lot:

Quote
Steve: Yeah, yellowtail tuna is Hamachi. And so that's the name of this. What it is, you know, we've talked now extensively for many weeks about SSH tunnels, about the concept of tunneling, about SSL, about the traditional IPSec, Microsoft's L2TP, IPSec, the original PPTP, Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, blah blah blah, you know, VPN, endpoint routers and all that. All of this really results or boils down to what do users actually use to solve these problems? We've talked about, you know, what it is that the problem is that VPN technologies solve. Hamachi - I am so excited about this, Leo - it's a secure-from-the-ground-up, lightweight, free, peer-to-peer system that does NAT traversal, so it solves NAT traversal, firewall traversal. And essentially it allows people to build ad hoc local area networks. It's interesting, when I first installed it, it assigned my machine an IP in the 5. range.

...or this:

Quote
Leo: Is it a tunnel? It's a tunneling solution.

Steve: It is. It is a virtual private network, peer-to-peer secure tunneling system that, I mean, I can't find a single fault in it. I mean, I'm using it. I'm in love with this thing.

It is very interesting conversation, and it's very recommended to read it in full.

Regards

Miha, and best of all it works as a charm ! I just installed it on my father's PC in Croatia. We have our small private network, and I connected through UltraVNC to his computer in no seconds... unbelievable fast, and of course I use Hamachi network IP on his PC to connect to.

I have to say, it's unbelievable fast, much faster than "regular" ways and we both are on ADSL (although his connection is quite bit slower than mine).

This is wondeful ! It simplifies things so much. And that small messaging module is also very useful, and best of all, clean, simple and it does what it's supposed to do.

I am behind my hardware router/firewall as well as behing my ZA free (testing new version again, gave up on Kerio finally  :-\ ). People using software firewalls shouldn't forget to allow Hamachi network (IP range) in trusted area. See example how i set it in my ZA:

MB: GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD3H Intel 7 Series  - LGA1155, CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K - Quad Core, 3.40GHz (3.80GHz Max Turbo), CPU COOLER: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Direct Heat Pipe R2, RAM: 16 GB Kingston HyperX Blu DDR3, VIDEO CARD: Galaxy GeForce GTX 560 Ti - 1GB, GDDR5, POWER SUPPLY: Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 - 750 Watts, HD: Seagate Barracuda - 2TB, 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s
