Latest Updated version loaded now says Firewall is disabled
« on: February 09, 2016, 05:36:35 PM »
OK, I put it off as long as I could but I finally got tired of Avast bugging me to upgrade.  I knew I shouldn't have because I've had so many issues before, even on my Windows 7 laptop.  But the problem now is my Windows 98 on my old computer which I use a lot.  It says that my windows firewall is disabled.  OK, I looked in older topics and found where people were saying, reboot again so I did, several times, still says my firewall is not enabled.  I checked my Windows 98 firewall  and it says it is enabled.  I then did what others also said helped was to go to my Avast files and click on "repair."  Nope nothing.  So is the problem just my Windows 98, will Avast not support it anymore?   IF so it would have been nice to know so I can make sure I don't renew my subscription this year.

Any advice would be appreciated.  And no, this old computer will not handle a new Windows version so, until it dies, it will live in my house.

Windows 98 doesn't have a firewall.

Well it sure says I do when I go to the control panel and I click on Firewall.  And it shows the firewall is enabled.  I just checked the system, It's Windows XP Pro.  I take it just Windows 98 is that much different?

Yes, Windows 98 and XP are completely different.
Windows 98 is just a DOS shell while XP is based on NT

OK, I can get around my computer but by a clean installation do you mean, remove it completely in the add/remove program, then go to Avast and find the newest upgrade and download and install it again?

Here you go, see if this helps: :)

 "Clean Install"
Down load 'and save to your desktop'  the Avast Uninstall  Utility here: https://www.avast.com/en-gb/uninstall-utility

Download to your Desktop your correct Avast version from here: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=182468.0

Now disconnect from the Internet
Uninstall Avast via the Control Panel

1.Run the uninstall tool and accept the reboot to safe mode
2.Once complete reboot your system
3.Reinstall Avast
