NeroBackitUp_Burn [42110] detection
« on: February 09, 2016, 08:50:06 PM »
Hi there.
I have scanned my external HDD with Avast Free Antivirus.
Scan #1 detection: DarkBasicOnlineFree.exe
I have followed up the automatic procedure as suggested by Avast.
Scan #2 and #3: Nero Backit Up_burn was detected [42110], described as decompression bomb, unable to scan.

How to proceed to get this issue solved?

I shall be looking forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience, thanks.

Best regards, Hermie

Thanks Pondus for your reply.
Unfortunately file exceeds max file size at both metascan and virus total.
Therefore I'm unable to upload and scan.

Kind regards, Hermie

Main issue with a file marked as a 'compression bomb' in the past was that, in older obsolete systems, the file could expand itself beyond the size of the hard drive free space and/or system memory and result in a system freeze or crash.  Included with that was the risk of corruption of system files.

The warning given is not malicious per se, but given today's hard drives are ranging up to 4 TB's in size, the potential issue today is not what it would've been as few as ten years ago if such a file were opened now.

Really a warning to caution an user over opening such a file in the first place more than anything else.  Pondus' link hints at that.

Thanks mchain. The file is located at a 1TB external HDD. What to do next? Remove the file?

Best, Hermie

Remove the file?
Do you use it?

File is not malicious, just a big highly compressed file that avast will not unpack and scan

you may right click and scan it with Malwarebytes

Thanks Bob3160, I got rid of Nero.
Then I scanned with mbam: zero detection! I felt happy.
Then I scanned wit Avast: unable to scan recycle.bin.
Can I delete/remove this file?
Can a special program maybe fix it.

Best regards, Hermie

Hi Pondus. Fix the Avast/recycle.bin issue. Or is there no need to fix? Why does Avast have a "problem" scanning all files whereas mbam does not.

Kind regards, Hermie

there may be a default setting that avast dont scan the recycle bin

just right click recycle bin and empty, then they are gone to file heaven   ;)

Thanks Pondus.
It seems that my pc behaves normal so far.
I haven't found the default setting which enables Avast to scan all data stored on my external HDD.

Enjoy your weekend, best, Hermie
