Why doesn't Avast offer direct downloads for Macs?
« on: March 08, 2016, 10:05:33 PM »
I've been a satisfied Avast user for my Windows 7 machine for a couple of years, finding it much more responsive and easier on system resources than another similar AV product which begins with an "A".

Lately I'd read favorable reviews on more than a few sites which I have faith and confidence in, so I thought I'd give it a whirl on my Mavericks Macbook Pro.

That is, until I found that I would not in fact be downloading Avast for Mac from Avast but from download.cnet.com

I find it hard to believe that a respected outfit like Avast would hazard their reputation this way. Download.com has become an abomination, hosting not only software with malware, but their own download wrapper containing adware and bloatware itself.

Thanks, but no thanks.

For almost every use case, I would rather prefer the "online" installer, that downloads the current VPS during install, not the "offline" installer:

Thank you, Asyn and tumic, for providing the links. I wonder what might have been a mitigating reason for Avast not to provide at least an additional mirror site for their AV for Macs.

Apparently, despite all the ad blockers I have installed here on OS X Safari 9.0.3 there were no alerts prior to landing on download.cnet.com; however, on my Windows 7 box, loaded with (among others) uBlock Origin, I was halted by an unmistakeable warning not to proceed. Not that I intended to chance a download of ANYthing on that site.

I won't persist in questioning Avast's motivating reasons for their association with download.cnet but I will once again voice my puzzlement and disappointment.
