I'm using the free version of Avast. Today I found surprisingly a new icon on my desktop. Installing new software on my computer, without my explicit approval, regardless what kind of software it is, is not tolerable!

I have uninstalled it immediately.

Avast put the icon on my desktop, but it is not showing up under programs and features. So, do I have it or not? I didn't ask for it, and I don't want it. i have no intention of paying for something when I don't have to.

Welcome to the forum. :)
It's free it isn't anything you're paying for.
If you decide you don't want it, you should have done a custom install.
If you want to remove it after it's been installed use Program and features in the Control Panel,
Select Avast and select Change. Next select modify > uncheck SafeZone Browser and click on Change.
Reboot your system and you're done.

This video shows you how it's done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_m09EAQX2ew

Please (re)search before posting.
How you can remove the SafeZone Browser has already been explained several times.

1]
Through control panel > software > avast > change

2]
Disable avast self-defense and delete the folder/files.
Remove the registry entries for it.
Enable avast self-defense again.

Hey, Eddy.  I just found this reply of yours again, only a year or so since it was posted.

Option 1 didn't work when I tried it all those months ago.  Decided, just out of interest, to
see if I could work out your Option 2 which, at the time defeated me.

Eventually discovered that I had to go into Settings, then into Troubleshooting where the
Self Defence element lurks.  SZ folder and the last remaining (.bat) file that I could not
eliminate have now gone to the great cyber-cemetery in the sky.

Self Defence re-enabled - Alles Gut!

I have removed all Avast products from all 7 of my computers/tablets/cell phones because of this intrusive, sneaky installation on my main PC without notifying or giving me the option to allow the installation or not.

This stupid move is going to cost Avast. The person who made this dumb decision should be fired.

I now use AVG antivirus.

When I saw the icon for SafeZone in my newly installed (on September 17) Free version of Avast it said "click to install SafeZone" -- so maybe they changed the policy of installing it without the user's permission? I agree doing that is simply unacceptable behavior... not that Chrome and FireFox  -- and AVG -- don't do that sort of thing all the time as well ;) ... it seems everyone wants to rule the world :-\

But in case anyone missed it, Avast now owns AVG :o

@jr,
Quoting things that happened 1 1/2 years ago doesn't make sense since many things change in that amount of time.
Right now, SafeZone Browser is only available if you already have it installed.

Yes it is available.
Read what Bob posted.

And it was rolled out with permission.
Users agreed with the licensing terms when they installed avast.
