I really don't know what the hell they are doing.
Me neither. If I didn't have 1,5 year of subscription remaining and wasn't a long time supporter still remembering the good old days of v2(yep that old)/3/4, I would have already switched to something else. I will give them one year to pick the ball up and then abandon the ship if they don't manage.

Can you give the checksum of avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe? MD5 and SHA1.  Thank you!

Hello,
just wanted to let you know about a major flaw that the most recent update brought for me:
I run Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 on a Samsung 840 EVO, basis system is a Dell Vostro 3350 (no hardware issues).

Upon updating and restarting, my OS gave me a bluescreen shortly after the Windows 7 logo is shown the first time - with error code 0x0000007B, no system file or other error description mentioned.
Luckily, I had a 2-month old backup on another hdd. So by changing disks and booting from the backup I was sure, there was no other hardware failure. I connected the original disk via USB and ran chkdsk /f several times - either no issues found or something about the Volumebitmap - but chkdsk seemed to have repaired it. Switching disks again and trying once more, still bluescreen unfortunately.

Ok, so using the error code: apparently it refers to a problem with booting, e.g. the OS cannot initialize properly. duckduckgo-ing brought a lot about the issue of ahci and ide drivers - I checked:
started Win7 in Secure Mode and ran regedit: for the msahci value was 0 as necessary but for iastorv it was now "3" - changed it but still bluescreen.
Again, in secure mode I ran msconfig and disabled the autostart-services and program for avast - et voilá, original OS came back to life.

Thought, it might have been the update, so to be sure; I removed avast completely and downloaded the most recent installer to have a fresh and clean version - it led to the same bluescreen again!
So, it seems to me that this version changes something in its autostart behaviour or in one of its services that at least my OS does not like. Anyone having the same/similar issues? Maybe you (as in avast-team) could investigate and suggest what might be responsible for the different behaviour?! My OS is up and running again but without avast and I'd like of course to continue using it ;-)

Thx in advance!

Best regards,

Updated okay via the GUI on Toshiba Laptop Windows 10 Home 64 Bit .. but it did install Safe Zone Browser, which I then had to do a manual uninstall on. Ran the standalone installer to update on my Dell 8200 XP Pro SP3 and all other updates, did custom install to just install what I needed (no safe zone or web rep) .. It would be nice if Avast would just update the program in place, keeping the same options / features we had already. If it wants to, the updater could bring up a small box asking if we to add whatever they are trying to add without asking. On the XP machine, some Avast Background Service was initially not running. Fixed with the Resolve Button and all reboots afterward are correct. Otherwise fine, so far.

C'mon, what the hell is with avast! for god sake!?!??!?!? >:( Build 2260 did install NG and I could see the process. 2261 again DOESN'T install NG anymore even though the Secure VM was checked during install. This is getting absurd. You need a month to fix this damn thing across several builds and then you again break it with one hotfix. WTF

I couldn't figure out why my system was slower than usual with this latest avast! version despite using Samsung 850 Pro for my PC drive. This version doesn't turn off Windows Defender. They are BOTH running together. C'mon!? How did you f**k this up!?

RejZor,  are you aware of the fact the no AV does turn the defender off? It turns itself off by wsc, as soon as another AV is registered. Do you see Avast as Antimalware provider in Windows security center? If yes, then that's all we can do with that. We have even filled a bug against Windows for not turning defender off in some cases. Microsoft might fix it but never in older versions that Windows 10 RS1.

In the past there was an API to turn defender off manually, but currently it is deprecated and we are banned from using it.

What exactly is the OS version you are running at the moment? Thanks.
Lukas

I can't because computer would not start with Avast installed. So I uninstalled Avast when in Safe Mode.

Am I correct that to follow those instructions you have to have Avast installed?

Question. Can I go back and install an older version of Avast Free?

EDIT Ugh, now a 2nd computer of mine is having trouble. Windows Explorer kept crashing. Wouldn't load at all. I uninstalled Avast and immediately Windows Explorer works OK.
