Since (auto)updating, I'm no longer able to create a rescue disk (USB)  :(
"Failed to create the rescue disk"
This happens if I try to overwrite the rescue usb created with previous version, or a new blank usb - both are Kingston DataTraveller 8GB.
Previous version (not updated) on other computer will still create rescue disk to both these usb, so confident that this is an Avast! problem, not usb problem.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
No suggestions yet. Would you mind to provide more details - ideally submit support package (https://www.avast.com/en-us/faq.php?article=AVKB33#artTitle) and let us know the package ID. Or at least OS version would help...

Anyway, this workaround might help - turn off the Self defense.
Hello Lukas,
Disabling self defense mode did the trick:

It not only worked but the whole process was much faster.
Hope that helps to get a permanent fix in place. :)

I updated two Windows 10 machines today to 2261 (one 32-bit and one 64-bit).  On both machines, the IE browser extension was unregistered after the update.  The file aswWebRepIE.dll still exists, but the corresponding registry entries are no longer present.  Is this a bug or a deliberate decision by Avast to remove this feature.  If so, why?

Thanks

Gary

Hi, yes we removed the browser extension from IE on Windows 10 in the latest version. The reason is that the usage of IE on Windows 10 is very low (most users prefer Edge or alternative browsers) and the impact on performance of IE was too heavy. For that reason we decided not to support AOS IE plugin on Windows 10 and rather will make extension for Edge, when available.

Thank you for your explanation, though I must say I find your reasoning incoherent.  One of the things that has discouraged me from moving to Edge is the lack of support for such extensions!  My case is for home use, but bear in mind also that any business users with the LTSB version of Windows 10 do not have the option of Edge or any other Universal Apps.  IE will be more commonly used on those devices.

I certainly do not take kindly to something that was labelled simply as an "Update" arbitrarily removing a feature that I have paid for.  Even more annoying is that was done without giving any warning that functionality was being deliberately removed.  This is very bad practice!

We-e-e-lll, upgraded over-the-top to 11.2.2261 just now in Admin, seems to work okay in User.  Like the GUI, it seems more intuitive than previous.  I can't really make any complaints as I've kept the minimalist settings from the previous 2015 edition, just File Shield and Home Network Security.

@Vlk - Please, when scanning/"fixing" the hosts file, can Avast! only remove single entries?  Deleting the entire file suddenly extinguishes my own security methods, exposing my browser to places it shouldn't redirect to...  Problem is that some/many of the entries may well be entities that Avast! doesn't like, but because they're pointed to 127.0.0.1 they are by definition harmless.  You should look for that before you do anything else.

System is in sig.

Gordon.

Would you have an example of a mistreated hosts file? When is it detected (on-access vs. on-demand scan)?
Sounds like the whole file could be detected by a non-specific signature, because specific hosts file processing should remove only the affected lines (and not when they point to localhost), as you're suggesting.

@igor - sorry, no.  The last incident was early- or mid-last year IIRC, then I slapped an exclusion on it and the backup on a data drive as well.

But the file was simply sucked up into the Chest, nothing was altered in it.  Detection is almost certainly on-access, as I have no reason at all to specifically scan it.

When it happened, all I did was tell the Chest to Put It Back!  That was Avast!2015, v10.  I never did find any host-file options in that version.

@igor - did you mean "Do I have a hosts file that was actually pinged by Avast ?"  Sometimes I'm a bit slow :(

Since the only thing I've ever done to my hosts file was add a couple of entries, yes I do have.  If you want I can chuck a copy up to DropBox for you to play with.

@gordon451: I meant the hosts file that was detected by Avast (and moved to Chest as the subsequent operation)... or rather, a file that still is detected - because if it only happened in 2015 and it's not detected anymore, I'm afraid it could be quite hard to find out what went wrong.
