Avast! latest version works very well in Windows Xp sp3.https://www.avast.com/windows-xp-antivirus
So why Avast!4.8? :-\
Because 4.8 has a minimal footprint and lacks the new features of the later versions.

It's not for everyone.  Some people need sandboxing and newer heuristic detection.  For the old school, 4.8 is beautiful.

I think the reason might be is 4.8 works on windows 7. Windows 7 still has security updates from Microsoft, and they would be doing so until January 14, 2020. Any windows 7 user with Avast 4.8 would be unsecured if Avast stopped updating 4.8 now.

Probably by the time windows 7 support end, the current version of avast then isn't compatible with windows xp at all and the majority of the people would be running Windows 11, 12 or whatever MS is going to call windows 10 successor.

I usually update to the latest version of Avast at least a month after it's released so I don't have to deal with bugs and stuff.

There are some features still present in 4.8 that have now been removed from the new version of Avast.
There are also features in the new version that aren't available in 4.8. It's a double sided sword.

No, it doesn't: constant system freezes during boot, severe bloating, even occasional crashes and BSOD (but you can fix that by adding the respective files to the list of exclusions).
If i would know for sure that i could reinstall 4.8 with its goofy but extremely user-friendly interface and minimal fingerprint i would uninstall 12 in a heartbeat.

No problem with avast 12.3.2280 on this XP Pro SP3 system.

Severe bloat, again not on my system with a minimal function custom install.

I have even less than you, yet i remember a time when my Avast folder was less than a quarter than what it is now and it was far nicer on the system.
I would insert the image directly but the way in which this site was coded doesn't work correctly for me.

Correct, it doesn't display on preview, only image site imported images would.

I am usually against resurrecting old threads but https://blog.avast.com/2017-marks-the-end-of-virus-definition-updates-for-avast-version-4.8  :)
A good decision. :) now make avast!'s CyberCapture technology more better.

Thanks Milos.  Confirmed.

Oh well...  I'll have to move to NOD32 3.0.  It's an End Of Life product, but there's a native 64-bit version for XP and they still release definition updates:
