Somehow you must have missed and not unchecked Install Chrome.

I believe it would be in the better interests for Chrome to be Opt-In rather than Opt-Out or at the very least make it clear that Chrome is getting installed.

That's ridiculous then.

What has Avast got to say about this?

For several versions, there have been users stating that Chrome was installed without the chance of opting out, only to be told that they simply overlooked the option.  Perhaps their doubters will now believe them.

Bob,
to be sure, I've just tried to reproduce the scenario you've described and I haven't discovered any problems. Win 10 and 7, latest online installer, custom installation (Chrome installation unchecked, SafeZone browser unchecked). Result: no Chrome.

Please note, that the Chrome installation option is on the very first screen of the installer. It is not possible to uncheck the Chrome installation on the "customize" screen. Is it possible that this was your case? If yes and you find this flow misleading, let me know and I will file an usability bug for it.

On the other hand, if you really unchecked the option on the first screen, please send me logs from this folder:
C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Persistent Data\Avast\Logs
Sorry about this situation and thanks for the report!
Petr

I wouldn't call it misleading but it is pretty easy to miss.

It would be better if it was placed better so a user wouldn't miss it like during the install etc.

Hello Petr,
I didn't notice anything on the first screen regarding Chrome. If it was there, I missed it.
Once I get home, and back to that computer, I'll totally remove Avast and Chrome and make another attempt at a fresh install.
I'll post back once that's done.
Thanks for the reply. :)

No problems here -- I updated thru the GUI, and got the usual opt-out screen for Chrome ("Almost done", or something similar) after rebooting.

It's there. Strange I missed it.
It's currently unchecked because Uncheky ( https://unchecky.com/ ) is now on-guard and has unchecked the pre-checked items.

I installed AVAST FREE 2261 over previous version on three computers and each time at the Continue page unticked the two boxes. I did the same thing again upon installing the latest 2262 version. Although I have Unchecky installed it did not untick the boxes.

Nah. You didn't miss anything. It simply doesn't show from time to time. It has been reported for a long time already, but gets ignored or dismissed ("you overlooked it"). Well, the nice thing about unchecky is that you don't miss it, so the next time you end up with it installed, you can be damn sure it really didn't show up (and yes, I do have unchecky, and yes, I still do end up with chrome installed on some updates, not this time though).

We probably need to start a ne thread on this :)

(And frankly, time to jump the antivirus ship altogether. All this stuff does more harm than good. Just look at the latest Symantec fiasco.)

I'm not sure I disagree here.  I followed the Twitter link quite aways in, and things were definitely getting murky.  I don't have the expertise to make any useful contribution beyond asking people to have a think, but I do consider that too many apps (including Avast!) have become bloated with "extras".  Take a good look at Symantec and MacAfee to see what I mean.

I have always had the philosophy of "The [purpose], the whole [purpose] and nothing but the [purpose]."  I threw out Netscape Communicator, Opera, oh, half a dozen "programs became suites" because they wound up doing nothing well and everything badly.  And while I'm not (yet) about to abandon Avast, I must make it clear that a rethink is badly needed in the construction of this anti-malware suite.

Tavis Ormandy does make the point that many of the unwanted options in many "suites" are only disabled, but they are still installed.  I assume that's because the suite winds up as a monolith rather than a modular assembly.  Certainly I saw no evidence that Opera did not install the bits that I didn't want and unticked.

I repeat, I'm not about to abandon Avast.  Apart from anything else, I'd have to learn a complete new ecosystem, and then find the outcome is not that different to Avast anyway.  But, devs, please make some effort to bring Avast back to its core function: killing malware: viruses, worms and trojans.  Really, nothing else matters.  And my personal experience from too many years ago is that modular assemblies, where unwanted parts are never installed, present far fewer headaches.

Gordon.

There is modularity with Avast either when you first install or later when you add/remove options from within the Avast modify option
Removal from here leads to removal from the system

That's good to know.

TBH, I never looked at Avast installs, there was no need.
