Avast Antivirus Free not workijng.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I updated the new version of Avast online on my Windows Xp Service Pack 3 yesterday evening. After restarting the computer, the message from avast is: "your system is unsecured." All three shields are disabled. I right to click to turn them on, but it does not take effect. I also find that there is a process avdump32.exe when I open the task manager.  I am not able to end that task. I am absolutely certain that this problem has arisen only after I updated the new version yesterday. I manually downloaded the vpsupd.exe (75.6 mb-77440 kb file) this morning and ran that to try and resolve the issue. I got the message that VPX files cannot be extracfed. installer cannot continue. So, I need your help. I do not know where to post this message and so, I am posting this as a new topic. Sorry for the trouble and thanks in advance.

Repair Avast:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> Avast
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.
